True story. I arrived on an island for a week long spa vacation many years/decades ago. I met a woman waiting for husband to appear with the luggage and she asked me where my luggage was. I said, "here!" and pointed to my one roller bag. She said, "that's IT? OMG, don't tell my husband." He arrived with a luggage cart with tons of big bags and of course she told him all my luggage was right there in the one little bag. We had a great week with lots of laughter, but anyway, the point is, I can't imagine ever being in a position to have to actually answer your question.
But, if I was, I'd return the cart to wherever I got it. Just like the grocery cart.

In all honesty, the only time I've ever used a cart, the answser is "Tip the bell-hop nicely." Usually I schlep my own luggage.

I would return the cart to where I found it. I do the same with my grocery carts.

The cart generally will be taken back to the lobby by me because I know I'll be heading back that direction soon enough anyway.

We always take it back to the lobby. Getting a few extra steps in after a long trip seems to help get the circulation going again, and the act seems the right thing to do!

I like to stay at Marriott, and rarely have too much luggage unless I have my cat, and all her stuff. If I do use the luggage cart, I take it back to the entrance where I got it.

Hi Fred- the price point of the hotel wouldn't make a difference to me because I would try to be courteous. We will typically take it back down to the lobby area.
As for the grocery carts, I take mine to the space they have in the parking lots for carts. I don't care how much money the CEO of the store makes. And especially during Covid, I took it back as a courtesy to the staff who had to expose themselves to the virus.
Be true to who you are no matter where you are...if you are a courteous person, you can be courteous in a Wal Mart or Whole Foods.

Do the right thing. Personally, I haven't used a cart for a long time, The luggage already comes with rollers and I don't normally have that much stuff.

I stash it in the closet in the room. I might need it in the morning.
Seriously, I return it to the spot I found it.
And I always put grocery carts in the caroll, not at the end of the parking space.
When last in Atlanta some fine guest thought the best place for the cart was between the elevator doors......for hours.
