History The area was called Walkers' Grove until it was platted as Plainfield in 1834. It was originally settled by a large community of Potawatomi, and the land was later ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of St. Louis of 1816. Indian Boundary Road aligns with the western border of the tract of land originally ceded. The earliest Europeans in the area were French fur traders. The first European settler in the area was James Walker, who traveled with his father-in-law, Methodist Reverend Jessie Walker as early as 1826. Reverend Walker evangelized the Potawatomi during his trips. In 1828, James Walker, in the company of several men, erected a sawmill around which the settlement of Walkers' Grove developed.Walkers' Grove flourished because of the DuPage River and established r...

If your curious about what your house might be worth these days, your not alone. In fact, many homeowners have lost touch with their homes current value over the last 12 months. The market has turned into what's known as a buyers market, and it's left a lot of people wondering...What's my house really worth? If your considering a move, or thinking about refinancing your current home, call me. I know what it's like to be curious about the market in your neighborhood... that's why I visit the MLS for every night to see what is happening all over the area. I'm addicted to real estate and quite frankly, I think that it's becoming a sickness. If you want to know what your house is worth, JUST ASK! I perform property valuations for banks, which is the next best thing to an appraisal.Julie Fer...
If you've ever driven into Plainfield heading south on Rt. 59, just outside of downtown Plainfield, one of the very first things to connect with your line of vision is a strange tall old white building on the left side of Rt. 126. I have no idea what this building had been previously used for, so your guess is as good as mine! For years now, it has often become the setting for scary stories told among my kids and nephews. They call it "the prison" in their tales, although I have never taken notice to any resemblance to the structure. Judging from the large chute on the side of the building, it makes me wonder if it could have once been a mill of some sort... The Plainfield Historical Society is located a stone's throw from the building, so I guess I need to do a little research. Maybe t...
I spent a little "free time" watching the movie Sweet Home Alabama this weekend. It's pretty sad when you equate "free time" with sitting on a gurney in the emergency room wearing one of the beautiful hospital gowns; but honestly I think it's the first time in about 2 years that I've actually watched a movie all the way through! I'm not sure if you've ever seen this movie or not, but there's a line in the movie that refers to an idea that's crossed my mind several times...Is it possible to have both "Roots" and "Wings"? Home is where you hang your heart, right? Or is it where your roots are planted deep into the ground? Maybe it's both.I have friends that are way more "Wings" than "Roots", who seem to soar from location to location without ever looking back. State to state, home to ...
"When Julie Ferenzi of Plainfield read an online journal about a baby boy who was given six to eights weeks to live and needed a bone marrow donor, she went into action." Catherine Ann Velasco, The Herald NewsSeveral weeks ago, you may remember a post by Julie Ferenzi entitled, This Has Nothing To Do With Real Estate But Everything To Do With Humanity. She wrote about a little boy named Trevor Kott who urgently needed a bone marrow transplant. She wrote from her heart. "I don't know why I feel it is my duty to help this family find this very special person who will save their little boy... but I do know one thing. Trevor hasn't given up and neither am I." When Trevor passed away, Julie still didn't give up. She organized a bone marrow drive in Plainfield, Illinois and she talked about i...
Trevor Kott October 14th, 2006 ~ April 25th, 2007 Trevor was born on October 14th, 2006, with a very rare type of cancer called AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). He endured 5 rounds of chemotherapy in hopes of keeping the cancer at bay until a compatible bone marrow donor could be found. As time went on, and no donor could be located, Trevor grew more ill.In his short, but meaningful life, Trevor summoned up the good in people. He challenged strangers to answer a call to be good to each other; to take care of one another. He made us take notice that, yes... one person can make a difference. It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I tell you, Trevor Kott passed away on April 25th, 2007 because a bone marrow donor could not be found in time to save h...
Today is April 12, 2007.And, this morning I received the following email from a listing agent:"You showed my listing at XXXXXX, Plainfield on 8/9/2006.I have recently reduced the price on this listing from $599,000 to $598,000 and thought you may want to bring your buyers back for another look."1) This is a reduction? If the buyers thought the property was OVER-priced at $599,000 would a thousand dollar "reduction" change their minds? NO!Now, a five percent reduction to $570,000 might make the property more appealing.2) I showed this property LAST SUMMER. That's 8 months ago. Would YOU assume that those buyers were still looking? Not me. Those buyers were "hot" in August and they made their decisions THEN.When buyers are looking they generally have a definite time frame. They want to ma...
The Village of Plainfield has enjoyed rapid growth over the past decade and is hotbed of residential real estate activity. In the current market sales have slowed, but still remain strong. Heavy new construction is the flavor of the day, with developments growing where the corn used to. Plainfield schools and parks are known throughout the area for their quality and residents have voted to make sure they stay that way. Despite the increase in market time and inventory, November 2006 prices were up 2.27% over November 2005 Inventories have risen as seen on the following chart which shows the supply and demand levels from the past two years. The next chart illustrates the current Months Supply of Inventory (MSI) that is the number of months that it would take to sell all of the current...

Mortgage NewsThe New World of Real Estate Prior to the Great Depression, federal law gave banks the authority to terminate mortgages whenever they chose. In fact, a bank's only obligation to a borrower in this situation was to provide consumers with a notice instructing them to either pay off their loan in full by a certain date or face foreclosure. During the Depression, cash-strapped banks exercised this right en masse, and millions of borrowers ended up losing their homes. This led to an entire generation of disenchanted consumers who were afraid to purchase a home that they couldn't afford to buy outright. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the government stepped in and created the Federal Housing Administration, and the 30-year mortgage was introduced. Back th...
