I bought a new HP laptop that was only $400 but it was slow. I bought additional RAM online for around $60, installed it myself, and now it performs with the speed I expect.

Yes. It's much more effective that increasing the chip speed unless your chip is really slow. And so easy I do it myself in just a few minutes.

In the old days yes. Now I tend to either buy them maxed out or I go to Crucial.com and buy memory for them there when I order the computer. Usually cheaper than buying from the computer manufacturer and 9 times out of 10 Crucial is making the memory for the manufacturer anyways. Plus they have a GREAT selector tool that you can plug in you make & model and it'll tell you the default configuration, what your max is and give you options on replacing or adding additional chips.

In the old days, yes.
IN the new days I max out the ram capacity on day number 1.
As you discovered, this is the least expensive upgrade for a puter.

Yes, and it made a small difference. I think it's better to just buy a new laptop.

No, I'd put that money towards a new laptop. I find adding things to an old one just a temporary fix.

Upgrading the RAM in a pc/laptop is a little old school. Because you a put new part in an old machine, and you never benefit the full use of the new part(s).
If you choose to go that route, do RAM, and swap the hard drive for an SSD drive, and when combined, your machine will be screaming.
But considering the cost and time to do this, then you can get a brand new laptop, with a guarantee to boot, for almost the same price....

Dennis Swartz Yes I have in the past, but on my desk top. It also has to do with the processor. Older computers can only access the RAM so fast.
