Me and the I'd raise the barrier of entry to NAR to business training 101, then I'd go to work on the states.

I pay little to no attention to NAR. We truly have no control over that organization at the end of the day. All we do is pay money. For me it's still a form of forced unionization.

"Raise the barriers?"
Vision is what is needed, not some dweeb that is a SS expert.
Travis Kalinick, Elon Musk, Eban Pagan are examples of people of vision who are driven by solutions to real problems, not old school protectionism.
Be aware, NAR is a clawless, toothless, harmless lion sill capable of a feeble roar from time to time but which the world has learned to ignore. As such, any priority they have is equally clawless, toothless and harmless since it is the local association that steers the agent vessel of real estate.
As a current symbolic and voiceless figurehead, NAR would be well advised to make their priority the 'de-unionizing' of the real estate industry which is overwhelmingly driven by elitist thinking and exclusionist policy embodied in the message expressed in first line of the response.
NAR needs to regain relevance by becoming relevant in the new economy.
The vision does not exist in NAR and vision lacking in most brokers and agents who are trying to retain relevance through dead practices.
How does NAR retain relevance?
#1. Stop drinking their own Kool-aid
#2. Listen to the home buyer and seller. I mean REALLY listen.
#3. Deliver the value the buyer and seller want.
#4. Agents will fall in line when they see the relevant value.
#5. STOP pretending to cater to the needs and best interests of agents. It a new world, be a part of it.

I do not have a selection. My recommendation would be to reduce expenditures, become self sufficient and reduce the dues.
One of my former agents did become the NAR president many years ago. She has done well with her own company.

I have no clue what they are doing, and I bet the public doesn't either. The public calls ALL those in the real estate business a "realtor".

They changed the required ethics training and that was good. I would like to see bettter advertising about why a consumer should use a Realtor. Zillow is winning the advertising war and makes me want to use them.

HILLARY CLINTON!!!
Because, if it's humanly possible for NAR to be any more of a disservice that ignores those it allegedly supports, she'll find it!

That's an excellent question Bob, and we should pay attention to it. I asked myself that question may times, and wether or not one can and/or should have the option to participate or not.
And maybe, that should be the question - can we change it so NAR is no longer mandatory.... but rather voluntary? And voluntary participation will be based on performance...?

Management that loses touch with the little guy in the real estate trenches... that remembers who they really work for out in the grass roots hinterland. Whoever on a lie detector test does not make the meter swing wildly and who is thoroughly vetted. Lasso that guy, gal, alien life form. ET knew the power of "H-O-M-EEEEeeeee" and hope someone has their finger on it, red hot fire in their belly, heart region to make the best choice possible. I remember when interviewed by the state REALTOR's for the president position "if your local Maine group wanted this issue position, but NAR was pushing for this differing one, would you be loyal to NAR over your state's 4500 constituents?" How do you think you would answer that one in the hot seat, under the swinging single light bulb while thirsty, strapped to a wicker bottom chair?

Whoever is there now has been 'groomed' so having a good outlook amounts to zero. They are so far removed from 'us' the little guy that I no longer care. Only people farther away from the average Joe are the politicians.
