A 40 hour work week, health insurance, retirement plan.  Good lord, what was I thinking 

I gave up nothing.... I had retired from the corporate world, moved overseas for a number of years. Wanted to go back to work when we moved back to the USA.

Actually unemployment.

I worked for Safeway for 20 years prior to starting my career in real estate, and have to say --- didn't give up any and gained LOTS!

Well I did some "magic" to convert savings into living expenses to start.

I gave up a corporate management career in hospitality. Yes it was a regular big paycheck with bennies but I was under the microscope 24/7 and had a horrible director or dictator more like it. Never regretted the decision.

Good morning Debbie. I gave up a family business, the time was right for me.

nothing. Best opportunity that ever fell in my lap.  I was in sales before (radio and newspaper)

Nothing Debbie, it was a win win situation. I love my work and was tired and burned out on my last career in the IT world.

My mind?  Just kidding...it was retirement!

Not a thing! I found myself a single mom and needed a career..Real Estate seemed the best opportunity!

I started at 18, so i gave him 4 years of college shenanigan's to be a grown up 4 years ahead of most my age, That was 30 years ago tomorrow.

My first marriage.

Graduate school.

Nothing. I have always been a career minded woman. At 23 I had already been in broadcasting for five years, and had won some awards. I started managing my own newsroom and doing local talk shows. I didn't stop there. I've also managed a few businesses since then, and took ten years off of my life to be a stay at home mom. After that I had to do something for me and I went into real estate.  

Debbie Reynolds I was an Oracle DBA,  an IT professional,  prior to starting my Real Estate career. A major switch for sure.

I was supposed to be an English teacher, but found my way into a summer job at a bank.  I found out that I had a talent for making real estate loans, and before long, I was a broker in which I have now been active for 49 years,

Gee, I never thought about it that way!  I never felt like I gave anything up.

I gave up a good automotive career but now do not miss the upper management.

Micromanaging bosses, reporting hours in three different systems, corporate politics and BS and losing control of my personal schedule to corporate's wants.

So to sum it up, I didn't lose anything I'd miss!  I gained freedom!

Ok, that's not true.  I do miss the healthcare plan: $2 a month, everything covered, free surgery and hospitalization, 80% off doctor's fees, no co-pay for prescriptions, $500 ER visits (used to be free as well).  The joys of working for the largest for profit hospital management company...

Debbie, I did give up teaching subjects that I loved (US History and Economics) and being around high school kids (99% of them were GREAT)  for 31 years, but I do not miss all the preparation and nightly grading of papers and quizzes/tests.

It is nice for both of us to sell real estate from our home and for me not  to make the daily commute and be controlled by 26 bells every day.

I gave up a job where I was very unhappy to work with my husband!

Debbie - I gave up a nice paying job where I put in 50-60 hours a week, and was salaried. I also worked in a cubical, was surrounded by incompetence, and was never really rewarded for my skills and value to the business. Everything had a policy and procedure, annual reviews, standard vacation, and the typical 2-3% raise every year.

Very hard to be motivated when you were just in a system where everything and everybody move at the same speed, and there seems to be no breaking out of the pattern. People who worked half as hard still got all the same benefits, and pay as I did.

All that corporate hassle, driving to a job, endless meetings, hiring and firing, etc.

I did not give up anything. I opened my first real estate and insurance office after finishing law school.

Free time

I was a teacher and gave up health insurance, retirement package and a week off every 8 weeks....plus holidays and summers off.... the pay was lousy.... loved the job and the kids....

Debbie Reynolds I gave up a lot of free time. Work your own hours, easy money are all fabrications of the real estate schools and brokers looking to recruit you.

Getting on airplanes for 2 to 3 round trips a week - both domestic and international for 11 years...  It's called Corporate America! 

My sanity, or the little that I had left. 

I did not give up anything. I used to be a Customer service rep at a major bank .

Limited income and working for the man.

The practice of law! Good move for me!

I didn't give anything up when I started my career in real estate.  Kept my grandkids past 4 and 1/2 yrs.  Started classes while keeping them, they are in school now.

Hmmm. The only thing that even has the "flavor" of giving something up is prior to real estate my evenings and weekends were 100% my own - no need to even own a cell phone or a home computer (other than if I wanted one for my own personal use).  I don't know what to call that - pure "off the clock time"??  That sounds bout right to me - I don't really have 100% off the clock time and more and that's OK,  but that's the only thing that I kind of miss at times.
