Yesterday, I was celebrating with the teachers of our school district at our local Walmart. As a board trustee, we awarded every teacher in our district with a $100 spending spree. While this may seem to be a small amount to some, these extra funds can make a big difference in a classroom.
I was a high school Biology teacher for many years and know from experience that teachers spend a lot of their own money in their classrooms. I also know that many teachers spend money on supplies to help out with the students who show up without the needed items. Sadly, many children come from situations where they just don't have the means to provide them with the supplies.
As we were cheering the teachers on as they filled their baskets, a woman in our community asked me what we were doing. I explained that the teachers were there to spend their $100. She looked at me with a sour face and replied, "That's all they are getting?"
When I heard her words, my heart was saddened to the core. While it would be great to be able to provide our teachers with much more, the joy we were witnessing was wonderful. These teachers were grateful and appreciative.
Hearing this woman's negative response gave me pause as to how our attitude reflects on others. Are you projecting positive energy or are you one of those Debbie Downers who sees the negative in everything? And, how are your words reflecting your inner self?
Perhaps it is time for a self-attitude check. Don't be that person that reflects a sour inner spirit. It is not becoming and others will want to run! So, how does your attitude look today?
