How Does Your Attitude Look Today?

By

Yesterday, I was celebrating with the teachers of our school district at our local Walmart. As a board trustee, we awarded every teacher in our district with a $100 spending spree. While this may seem to be a small amount to some, these extra funds can make a big difference in a classroom.

I was a high school Biology teacher for many years and know from experience that teachers spend a lot of their own money in their classrooms. I also know that many teachers spend money on supplies to help out with the students who show up without the needed items. Sadly, many children come from situations where they just don't have the means to provide them with the supplies.

As we were cheering the teachers on as they filled their baskets, a woman in our community asked me what we were doing. I explained that the teachers were there to spend their $100. She looked at me with a sour face and replied, "That's all they are getting?"

When I heard her words, my heart was saddened to the core. While it would be great to be able to provide our teachers with much more, the joy we were witnessing was wonderful. These teachers were grateful and appreciative.

Hearing this woman's negative response gave me pause as to how our attitude reflects on others. Are you projecting positive energy or are you one of those Debbie Downers who sees the negative in everything? And, how are your words reflecting your inner self?

Perhaps it is time for a self-attitude check. Don't be that person that reflects a sour inner spirit. It is not becoming and others will want to run! So, how does your attitude look today?

I try to be as positive as I can about life and events. We never know how a situation is going to turn out until it is finally over. I love the quote from the movie The marigold hotel or the sequel I believe. The manager/owner of the hotel says it will all be alright in the end, and if it is not alright, it is not the end.

Hey Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - that is an excellent quote. Thank you for reminding of that one.

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist - you are so kind. I appreciate your platform to "flush" out the negative.

Excellent post and a chance to pause.  Since the pandemic, negative responses have increased ten-fold.  I'll definitely do a reassessment of my attitude and be mindful of how I appear to others.

Teachers often go out of pocket to provide classroom supplies.  I'm glad this event was available to them.

I guess she never heard of “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth”, but it probably wouldn’t make much sense to most people these days anyway.

Hi Paula- I do my best to have and project a positive attitude and also admit that I am not always successful.

Hi Paula,
I know teachers often need more supplies than are provided. One of my cousins who is a teacher has set up an Amazon gift registry on various occasions. She puts in there what she needs for her classroom and asks friends and family to buy whatever they can to help. It's kind of fun to go shopping for her and the kids instead of myself.

As for negativity, I just don't go down that path.

Hi Paula - this is a wonderful reminder.  Teachers deserve all of our support.  Every one I know does it because they want to make a difference.  I am there to help any way I can.

Good morning Paula. Each day waking up on the right side of the grass creates new opportunities. Might as well expend your energy with a positive attitude. Enjoy your day.

The $100 was a wonderful gift! I'm sure the teachers were very happy. As for the attitude of the lady who thought it should be more, I hope I never sound like that!

Are you a person who looks at the world with the glass half full or half empty? Possibly we may wish to remember that person may have been coming from a place where she believed there should be more money and was actually shocked.  Sometimes we must step back and reflect upon what is said, how it is said (body language) as well as the person saying it.

Paula, while reading I was thinking how special for these teachers.  How special for those who helped enable this wonderful action.  I was so saddened you had to have some of that spoiled by an entitled A.. H...   Congrats on the wonderful event that was no doubt appreciated by so MANY.  Mark
