Most Earlysville visitors learn rather quickly that the 17th century Michie Tavern, which stands nearby Jefferson’s Monticello, was originally constructed along Buck Mountain Road between Free Union and Earlysville.  There is a marker along the road, though it does not appear to me to be an official marker and I am not convinced that it marks the actual spot.  However, I believe that the plaque is located in an area approximating the original location of the tavern. A Mr. and Mrs. Henderson moved and reconstructed Michie Tavern to its current home near Monticello in 1927.  Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful in locating any photos of the tavern before its relocation.  There does exist a 1928 photo in the Holsinger collection at the Small Special Collections Library at the University...

We are delighted to see the opening of the new E-ville Grill at the central Earlysville shopping area.   The fare is typically American Grill, with hamburgers and hot dogs and BLTs, absolutely perfect for an afternoon break from chores or an affordable night out in a comfortable neighborhood spot.  A little bird tells us that ownership of the grill is also involved with Chandlers Bakery, a Charlottesville favorite.  Welcome to Earlysville, E-ville Grill!

My husband, Stephen, and I built our home in Earlysville in the Spring of 1990.  At that time, I was working with a local builder, helping him find land on which to construct speculative homes for sale.  One day, the builder and I walked some land along Bleak House Road, and one of the lots happened to be situated on a bluff, with seasonal views of the reservoir.  The land was very affordable, and since Stephen and I had been talking about moving to a new home, one that was larger than the townhouse which was our starter home, this opportunity was a dream come true.  That was over twenty years ago.  I am still in the real estate business, and I am finally writing this blog which talks about Earlysville, it's history and it's present day. EARLYSVILLE...  If you Google "Earlysville", you'...

Last night, Town Hall meeting with Ann Mallek and Albemarle's Commonwealth's Attorney & new Police Chief Last evening in Earlysville, I attended the 2011 Spring Town Hall Meeting sponsored by Albemarle Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Ann Mallek of the White Hall Magisterial District.  She brought with her Albemarle County's new Chief of Police, Steve Sellers, and Albemarle Commonwealth's Attorney, Denise Lunsford. Personally, I am a strong supporter of Ann Mallek.  She is incredibly smart; her knowledge and understanding of seemingly every issue, well, frankly, it takes my breath away.  I can't imagine that there would be anyone more capable and more committed to our community than Ann.  Guess that makes it clear who I'll be voting for! Though there were general Albemarle/Earlysville qu...

We had a glorious walk with the boys yesterday afternoon (Sunday).  60+ degrees, gorgeous clear blue sky, slight breeze... ahhhh, end of February?  We definitely must have done something right for Mother Nature to have blessed us with yesterday.   Our walk always includes two rambunctious Dals.       It also includes a couple of very wonderful barns. This is the barn at Fairgrove, and, unfortunately, it's time is short for this world.  It's in terrible shape and really not at all safe, so the people who purchased the lot to build a home will surely remove the barn one day.  We'll enjoy it as long as we can. The next barn is the barn at Bleak House, the home for which our road was named.  The people who own Bleak House use it as a barn, though it also served some function for their da...

We walk many mornings, mostly leaving the house between 5:30 and 6:00. It was glorious this morning, 40 degrees, no wind, full moon waning on the way out. We walk 2 or 3 miles, depending on the morning and how early we get going.  This morning we were up, stretched and out of the door early enough to do the 3-miler.  I'm determined to shed the extra-20 this year, so I've added 5 pound ankle weights. This is the sunrise we often see at the 1.5 mile mark.

A couple of interesting Earlysville listings crossed my radar this week... I showed this home over three years ago; it was over-priced, and the seller was completely unrealistic.  It never should have gone to foreclosure, but it's a great opportunity for someone now.  Call me to see it, (434) 981-0871. Earlysville Heights was one of the first developed neighborhoods in Earlysville.  It is located just beyond the village grocery store area, on the right.  Over 50 homes were constructed between 1968 and the mid-70s.   I remember previewing homes in Earlysville Heights in the early years of my business, and they were often a tough sell, because the homes were just reaching that age that they needed updating.  Today, many of the homes have enjoyed updating, particularly of the major systems, kitchen and baths.  Still, the prices have remained low.   The homesites are generally just shy of an acre; the utilities are private well and septic systems.  The lots are beautiful, with fully-mature landscaping.  I remember so well helping a client purchase this home on Ridgemont back in 2006.  The...

On foreclosure, bankruptcy & being a privy specialist I have discouraged clients from putting their homes on the market over the last several years, unless they have a definite need.  Those who have wanted or needed to proceed, we’ve worked together to get their properties into top condition for whatever the competitive price is that we come up with to get the house sold.  But, if they didn’t have to sell for a specific reason, most have decided to stay put.I just ran a quick check of our area, and, today, January 25th, there are 85 bank owned (foreclosure) properties and homes being sold short listed in our MLS.  Though any is too many, that is less than many communities throughout the country.  We've lost a couple of small builders to bankruptcy, which I'm sorry to see.  Honestly, the...

Actually, maybe I should call this post "Ballooning in Earlysville", because that where we live and that's where the WOOOSH! gets me every time.  This morning was one of those mornings, and, unfortunately I wasn't camera ready, again.  I thought about waiting for the next time, but I've missed the last two, so.... The photo left is nearly identical to the one I have in my head from this morning :-). Somewhere on my computer, or on a disk, there’s a photo of balloons settling down over the Reservoir near our home.  We had just moved into our home in Earlysville over twenty years ago, and we were thrilled to realize that our area is part of a regular tour for balloons. We’ve been enjoying the hottub on a cool Spring day and waved to ballooners as they fly over, and we’ve had dogs go nuts ...
