Tuesday, September 7, 2010 marks the opening of the new school year here in Prince William County. While many of the school commuters are seasoned veterans there is a group of "newbies" every year. However, they all deserve your respect and consideration. The school zone speed limit lights have been on this week to remind us of the upcoming beginning of the school year. The law requires you to stop behind a school bus when their red lights flash.School crossing guards will be out in full force every morning and afternoon at critical intersections. They are there for one reason only - it is to protect our youngest citizens as they walk to and from school.   The National Museum of the Marine Corps is the newest major tourist attraction in Northern Virginia and Prince William County VA. There are interactive tours of Corps operation beginning with its' founding in 1774. Each month there are numerous activities scheduled to generate further public interest. The Prince William County Fair on Rt 234 in Manassas is the largest county fair in Virginia. There are exhibits, competitions, amusement rides for kids and adults, carnival games of chance, food, displays and entertainment to satisfy just about every interest. My husband and I have been attending the Prince William County Fair for years and plan to this year as well.Activities and events vary every day of the fair. It will help you considerably to review The Daily Prince William County Fair Schedule. I hope I have the opportunity to renew a friendship I made last year. There will be musical entertainment at various venues throughout the fairgrounds. As a farmer's daughter I really enjoyed listening to country music in front of the milking station in the dairy barn. This poor little deceased evergreen tree has been there so long it no longer qualifies as an "everbrown". It is on public property near the curb and I suspect it is a victim of budget cuts. The state has had to cut back on mowing median strips for the same reason. There are times I have been tempted to stop and pull the poor thing out, but I don't want to run afoul of the law. Prince William County has an excellent park system that icludes year round aquatic and fitness centers, sports fields, summer camps, water wave parks, skateboard facilities and four golf courses. Not being a golfer I cannot personally recommend the courses, but we have clients and friends who indicate the three 18 hole courses are well played and are considered "championship" quality. One is in the east, one in the center and one in the western part of Prince William County. Lake Ridge is 9 holes set along the Occoquan Reservoir as part of the Lake Ridge Golf and Marina Park.All four courses participate in THE FIRST TEE program which offers instruction and golfing for young and future players.We visited each course and took what we believe to be representative photos for the slide show.... 06/07/2010
