Immersion in history in Salt Lake City UT Come with me back a century, a whole hundred years, and I like to fancy, to the day. In our reverie let's read the story in the collage above as though we were by standers at witnessing the events of the story. Having difficulty? Not for me. Let me explain. Utah temperatures struggle in the 20s and low 30s after a day of heavy snow. Roads and footpaths, although bladed, had exra build up, turned to ice by footprints or tires ~ treacherous for the unwary or the unknowing. And did I say it was cold today, especially before sun up. Hardy a person on my packed 7am TRAX (light rail) might convince me that they were enthusiastic about being there. Now think about Martha again. Not so difficult, eh? History in Utah becomes alive for me. I hope you migh...

So much to see and do in Salt Lake City UT as you get history to come alive Yesterday I got to see "A Jewel in the Crown..." Once the Rio Grande Depot (Salt Lake City) of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. Built in 1910, it was in the style of Great Depots of the US, at a cost of $750,000 (Union Pacific Depot, a few streets away, was only $300,000). Ghosts of the past, in Utah's romance with Rail, are encouraged to dwell in the building. A mudslide (most expensive landslide in US history, and the first presidentially declared disaster area in Utah) in Thistle UT (65 miles SE of Salt Lake City) brought the Salt Lake to Denver Zephyr service to an end in 1983. Amtrak used the building until the tracks were pulled up and moved several hundred yeards west in 2000. The State of Utah...

Why is it so difficult to find a decent house in the Avenues in Salt Lake that has a garage? I’ve heard this question asked quite a few times over the last few years. Well, not to be smart, but it is because houses in the Avenues were nearly all built over 75 years ago when garages were much less common. Since the average lot size in the Aves is just .10 acre, building a garage is not always an option in this area. Hence, the lack of garages. But don’t worry, some guy (a very smart, attractive, although badly balding, guy) took the liberty to set up a page where you can find every house that is for sale in the Avenues in Salt Lake that has a garage. Yes, it exists. This is like the Holy Grail of websites. Some say that finding it is akin to finding the Fountain of Youth or winning the l...

Seismic skew from the West Yellowstone end of the Intermountain West My hobby has me observing seismic events (earthquakes) for the Intermountain Corridor (Utah to Yellowstone) on a weekly basis (168 hour period). My intention always is to inform, never to predict or alarm. A week is a short time in earth history, but it provides a manageable duration for hobby observation. This week West Yellowstone featured as though it was trying to be the only deb at the ball. For the 91 events for the week, West Yellowstone MT accounted for 53 of them with a few others in MT close by. Two of the events in West Yellowstone (a 3.4, and a 3.1) were in the minor category, with some others in the high 2s, in the micro category. Utah's seismic efforts for the week showed some events in the low 2s Data an...

CReATE allows differently abled in Utah to go where they wish My favorite piece of Assistive Technology Equipment is my power chair. It is a "product" of CReATE, an initiative of Utah State University. You see, CReATE  built my chair from fully serviced donated parts, fitted new batteries and was able to pass it on to me at a great price.  It has served my demanding needs for two years, being comfortable to boot. I am only too happy to promote the ideals and services of CReATE in Utah. Citizens Reutilizing Assistive Technology Equipment (CReATE) does little in the way of public advertising, although social media posts indicate its willingness to help people in need of such devices here in Utah. The process for obtaining assistance is simple. CReATE  phone number 801 887 9398. They are l...

Even a penny whistle is subject to inflation Little treasures unearth themselves in Salt Lake City UT. At times I set my chair to "browse", and in so doing I stumble across wonders designed to provoke my imagination. One such trove is "Edinburgh Castle" in downtown Salt Lake City UT. It is a shop, among many in the area, designed to inspire, and to enhance nostalgia, especially of someone of Irish heritage. Even though stressing Scottish imports, Ireland, and even Australia (this won me), are graciously included in the store's inventory. Certainly a place to dally for a wee while. Why Scotland in Salt Lake City UT? Perhaps a reminder of the high British influence among the early Pioneers of this valley. Early rolls are a testimony to this. On occasion, pipers in kilts can be found enter...

Tripping over history in a downtown Salt Lake City UT museum Across the street from Temple Square, Salt Lake City UT is the Museum of Church History and Art. It's half a block north of the Temple Square TRAX (light rail) Station. You can take the Green Line from the Salt Lake International Airport. Blue Line trains also stop there. In the Museum you get a feel for the early days of the Pioneers with many hands-on exhibits ~ a log cabin, covered wagon, hand carts, ship's berths. Clothing and utensils. Dioramas show the meticulous layout of early Salt Lake City. Artisans' tools involve you in the building of great structures. The Museum houses a major exhibit of "100 (now 103) Years of Scouting". Walls are adorned with art works. Children are offered their own experience. It's for all age...

Salt Lake Valley UT wraps itself in Fall colors Fall colors are appearing all over Utah. It's not that it is cold - much. Rather nice in fact. In recent years Fall may not have been all that evident - a slide of summer straight into winter, with nary a pause in between. It is nice to know our current balmy weather is due to a stalled high pressure system off the California coast giving us clear skies and resulting higher temperatures. Time enough, two weeks even, to enjoy the colors nature has provided to clearly mark the changes of season. Add snow showing on the higher slopes, and the Salt Lake Valley of Utah is worthy of your attention as a picture perfect place to visit. We have something spectacular here for you year round. Come join us for Fall colors ~ you may even be tempted to ...

Not having FHA approval can really affect the value of a condo complex. If you are an FHA buyer looking in the Avenues in Salt Lake City, you may have a tough time finding a condo that is eligible for FHA. Unless, of course, you found this article. Finding this list of FHA approved condos in the Avenues in Salt Lake City is like finding a twenty dollar bill in an old pair of jeans that you haven’t worn in two years. It’s your lucky day. Of all the condos in the Avenues area, only a handful of them are eligible for FHA. You may be interested to know that you may have other loan options. If you are using an FHA loan because of the low down payment, you may want to look into a Homepath loan that only requires 3% down and doesn’t have the same restrictions on condos that FHA does. Also, you...

Salt Lake City is a hotspot for Victorian Style homes, especially in and around the Avenues. Finding one for sale, though, is not easy to do. Why is that? It is because people tend to hang on to Victorian homes for a long time. The turnover rate is much lower than it would be on, say, a split entry home.   First, before I get up on my soapbox about Victorian Style homes, let me give you a link to every Victorian Style home that is currently for sale in Salt Lake City. This list is updated every day and includes complete photo tours of each property. Take a look and let me know if you want to take a look at any of them. Now, let me give you a little insight about Victorian Style homes in Salt Lake City. First, I’ve found that there is some confusion as to what, exactly, a Victorian Style...
