I have known Kim Reed for many years; first as a home builder and then as an advocate for Habitat for Humanity. Kim helped plat and construct Huser Village Subdivision located in Alvin Texas, this is a HFH subdivision.   If you don’t know what Habitat for Humanity is then you must have been living under a rock. HFH is an organization, where low income families can apply to have a HFH home built for them. The approved applicant must help with a number of on-hand construction hours.  That person will wait their turn until a home has been completed for them.   This is a successful program that has been in place for many years. I personally think that the TV show “Home Extreme Make Over” came into being because of HFH.   With more involvement Kim decided to move on from HFH and into Builder...

The mosquitoes have been horrible in Brazoria, Galveston, and Harris County for weeks now.  The cool gulf breeze brings in the salt water mosquitoes. They are really tiny insects with a forever stinging bite that will leave you itching like crazy. Then there are the fresh water mosquitoes which you can throw a saddle onto and ride in to work.     This morning I had a deluge of weekend angry voice mail messages from people wanting to get relief from these tiny vampires from this municipality. These mosquitoes greet you at your door as you leave to your car and try to board with you.   The ones that are lucky enough to get into the car with you bombard you the whole time you are driving. It is a comical scene to see someone swatting their own face while driving to get relief!   I had so m...

We have many critters at my day job...we just catch them and release outside or find a new home for them. The first critter I ever saw near my office door was a water moccasin snake. It was small, only a foot long, but long enough to kill someone. The animal control people came and took it out and released some where in the county. I have never seen big burly men over six feet being reduced to a quivering mass of jelly. I am not looking down my nose at them I have the same aversion to spiders. The second and third were a couple of kittens...we got those adopted out to some of the employees. The next is a rash of mice those are now gone too. The next was a itty bitty gecko. Ron said it was sitting on the back rest of his chair, he caught him and put him outside. Here is a picture of him....

Froberg’s Farm Pumpkin Patch in Alvin, Texas   This past weekend my family went to Froberg’s Farm in Alvin, Texas.  We had so much fun we ended up staying out there for a couple of hours.  They have a “Pumpkin Room” set up with loads of pumpkins and places to take pictures.  Every weekend there is a hay ride – scavenger hunt that last about 30 minutes.  The wait is pretty long so I would recommend buying your tickets right when you get to Froberg’s.  The Hay Rides run from 9:15AM-5:30PM Tickets can be purchased and out at the Snack Shack for $2.00 a person.

The City of Alvin’s Fire Marshal, Martin Vela, has turned in his resignation to accept a position as Brazoria County’s Fire Marshal.  Martin has been on site to review plans on the Home Depot, Alvin Independent School District’s new schools, Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites, La Quinta Inn and Suites, Dish Network, and many other commercial and residential new starts.     Martin Vela was hired as the City of Alvin’s Fire Marshal in June of 2000, by the Police Department. For the past five years, the Fire Marshal’s office has relocated to the Fire Department and he has worked diligently to improve on the City’s fire codes and help to update some of the city’s ordinances.   I have had the privilege to work with Martin on a weekly basis and I will miss him. Who ever replaces his positio...

With the development of Kendall Lakes residential subdivision, located on North Business 35 in Alvin Texas, the need for an additional school became apparent.  The developer, Clinton Wong, donated 15 acres towards the development of that new school.   After several meetings with the school district it was decided to move the faculty and students of Mark Twain Primary School to this new school building. Mark Twain is currently located on House Street near Bypass 35 and is home to the Tigers mascot.  Mark Twain is the oldest school building in Alvin and was constructed in 1964. The school has seen many updates but the time has come to just replace the building.   Mark Twain is located in the Alvin Independent School District which has a “Recognized” rating from the Texas Educational Agenc...

The ALVIN WEEKEND Sun-Advertiser announced what I personally know to be a much awaited and welcomed project to the City of Alvin.... and that is a Hospital. The Sun wrote that "University General Health System, Inc. is a diversified, integrated multi-specialty health delivery system," is partnering with the City of Alvin. The critical care hospital will be 27,000-square foot and located on North Business 35 across from Kendall Lakes, a new residential subdivision in Alvin. The location will consist of 10 acres and will be constructed in three phases. The construction should be completed in December of 2011. In 2001, I and my husband worked for a telephone poll surveying company which called area citizens asking if they would be interested in once again having a full working hospital in ...

Forest Heights is a master planned community. The developer, Don Barras planned to construct eight sections in this entire subdivision.  He platted all eight sections, however, only Sections one through four have been sold to home builders. Below is one of the homes located within this subdivision. But my favorite thing about this lovely subdivision is the massive tree at its entrance. There are currently four homes for sale in this subdivision. The price range is $109,000 through $155,000 and the square footage range is from 1,258 to 1,4200. Note there are larger homes in this subdivision but they are not for sale. If you are interested in buying a home in this subdivision please call me at 713-822-1655 or click on one of the icons below to contact me.

In Brazoria County before you enter Alvin city limits on Highway 35 you will come to a large pottery store. It is a mom and pop business and they work out of their home.  Since times are bad the owner is trying as fast as he can to sell out his product. At this location you can get 3 to 4 foot large decretive pots for you landscaping needs at a cost of $75.  This is a saving since I saw a pot that was about a gallon size for $50 at Wal-Mart. So I you are needing to landscape your home go by this mom and pop store.. by the way there is no name attached to the place. Just look for the home with all the pottery out front.  Below are pictures of some of the other stuff he sells there.   Well if you live close to Alvin or would like to take a day trip go by this place and check it out. They ...

North Pointe Trails in Alvin is the newest Subdivision being constructed. The Developers were, Barry and Scott Black a father and son team. Scott, Barry’s son, took pride in naming the streets of each of the subdivisions they developed with a theme in mind. The theme for North Pointe Trails was race car drivers. To our loss Scott passed away about six months ago. We all miss him as he was such a great guy. He had an awesome giving personality.   The newest builder to come to this subdivision is Grand View Builders who has several products to offer the new home buyer. Above is a picture of the model home.   What I noticed the most about this layout and this is how it should be...is that each room should lead your eye to the next room . In this case the beautifully landscaped front yard l...

The YMCA is located in Alvin Texas at 3201 South Highway 35Alvin, TX 77511-4153(281) 585-3112 Four years ago the Young Men's Christian Association completed construction of the new YMCA in Alvin Texas. The city at the time contributed as much as possible as well. Land was donated by a local for the site. Since I don't know if they would like their names mentioned I will leave that out. The thought started in 2000 if I remember correctly and it took quite some time to struggle through all the red tape that can follow an endeavor such as this. The project turned out great and they have since added some awesome soccar fields in the "back 40" of the location. My husband and I thought it was about time that we joined the nearest YMCA and it turned out to be the one in Alvin. We were received...

All this talk about the new school year started reminding me my first school year and all its fond memories. So I have decided to share some of those memories with you.   When I was little there was no Kindergarten. There was only First Grade in those days. When I started my first day of school my parents only had to provide a book satchel, Big Chief Tablet, paste, 8 Crayolas and a big fat pencil. That was the extent of our school supplies. My book satchel was red and black “Scottie” plaid. The inside was lined with rubber and had that wonderful smell of a rubber dolly. I loved that smell as it reminded me of the dolly that my friend Phyllis had and I wanted one. I loved my Big Chief Tablet because it was red. In those day’s red was my favorite color. I loved to draw pictures in my ta...
