For the last week or so, I have been helping my friend sort through things in her parents’ house to get it ready for an estate sale. It has been interesting, sad, fun and overwhelming all at once.Her parents were artists, and their home is filled with wonderful pieces of art that they created – beautiful oil paintings, sculptures, ceramics and so much more. There is even a mural on the living room wall that they painted. My friend said every time her parents painted a picture of oak trees and bluebonnets, someone bought the painting.    BOO!The BestHalloween Decorations In The Neighborhood!                 I decided to put up some decorations for Halloween so that my street will have decorations. So far I am the only resident who has decorated. So, I am the best decorated yard in my subdivision.            Additionally, I have yet to find my human sized full skeleton frame. It is probably packed up somewhere in the garage storage.        I added a very large skull that I put my dad’s hat on and took a picture.I plan to use that photo in a story I plan to post later this week. I Found It! I have finally found the desk that I have been looking for to place in my office. I have searched everywhere and I just could not find the right desk to place there. While thumbing through Face Book on Saturday I saw a post by a friend of mine who has a high end consignment store. Linda McGinn had posted about the desk and various other items. She is the owner and operator of Treasure Hunters located at 206 W. House St., Alvin, Texas.  I am telling you I jumped up and went straight away to the store to take a closer look. Aldi Grocery Opening in Alvin Texas   Aldi Grocery a low-price grocery store will soon be open in Alvin Texas. The food store will be located on Bypass 35. Aldi has 1,400 stores in 32 states across the nation. Aldi does carry some food name brands but 90 percent of the goods are Aldi brands.  In order to keep the prices low at Aldi’s they have developed a simple and innovative rental cart system. Not having a person to employ to bring the carts back to a parking place helps keep the prices low. This keeps the cart parked in a central location by leasing them out charging a refundable fee of 25 cents each.   Another way to keep prices down is by charging for shopping bags. The Dog Stood Guard Over Him All Week     We had a very sad situation in Alvin on Friday. My surrounding neighbors, John, and I have been taking care of a homeless little old man for about three years. We all fed him and his dog.   Each day he would walk to the convenient store a little ways from our home and sit there all day. My husband and I always made sure he had something hot or cold to drink depending on the weather; and we gave him a few bucks to get what ever he needed in between donations of sandwiches and burritos. This guy never asked for money or food. He never held up a sign, he just sat there never saying much.   Last year while crossing the street he got stuck by a car and was out of commission for a while.   Today I was lucky enough to be invited by Scott Salter  to a soft open at The Frozen Spoon in Alvin. They have 20+ flavors of frozen yogurt on tap. I made sure I tasted many of the flavors and I know that I will be coming back to this place for a bowl full of yogurt! The Frozen Spoon is located at 1101 East Highway 6,  in Alvin Texas.   Alvin doesn't have an ice cream parlor but now we have the next best thing; especially for me since I can't have ice cream.   Late this afternoon I received word via Face Book that the store will be officially open for business tomorrow.    I guess I now have a new location to meet prospective home buyers and sellers and have a bowl of yogurt at the same time!      11/10/2014

Today is National Sandwich Day!   My friend Pat Mayberry of Southern Elegance Catering reminded me that today was National Sandwich Day!      It is thought that the 4th Earl of Sandwich John Montagu was the designer of the sandwich. It is said that the Earl would spend so many hours at the gambling table that he would asks the servants to put slices of meat between bread so he could keep on playing. Soon his gambling mates would also ask for sandwiches to that they too could stay at the gambling tables.   Thank you Pat for the image of this sandwich.   - 11/03/2014

Founded in 1982 the Kiwanis Club of Alvin was initiated by a few local businessmen. Their hopes were to make the Alvin community a better place to raise children.   The first clubs were organized to promote the exchange of business among the members. They soon found themselves providing many charitable gifts to needy children. Helping needy children became what they were all about and it has snowballed from then. They hold many yearly events that the entire community look forward to each year.      I have many friends who are members of the Alvin Kiwanis Chapter.
