Get a coffee - help a kid - it is that simple! From their website: "June 1, 2011 is a special day for Tim Hortons Restaurant Owners, team members and guests. It's Camp Day! Camp Day is the one day a year when Tim Hortons Restaurant Owners across Canada and the United States donate every penny from coffee sales to the Tim Horton Children's Foundation. In 2010, Camp Day raised more than $9.7 million CDN"     Every time you buy a coffee at Tim Hortons on Camp Day they will help send more than 14,000 kids - who could otherwise not afford it - on the camping adventure of a lifetime. How cool is that! And at our local Gananoque Tim Hortons', you can also help a kid by getting a hair cut!! Who'd of thunk it?      Haircuts for Camp! Hair Stylist, Anita Cavic is donating her time and energy (and...

Gananoque, Ontario A huge thank you to our local supporters of the 5th Annual Yard Sale for the Cure -  another resounding success!   The weather actually cooperated with us this year and we remained dry for the entire morning.  My friend and former client, Nancy was sweet enough to help my husband and I this year. She also baked some cupcakes for the cure; hers are the bright pink frosted ones and I did French Vanilla and of course, chocolate! We were impressed with the steady stream of shoppers, except for those who wanted to ignore our 8am start time and thought they would begin at 7am just because they were so special!  NOT. I decided a few years back to not price anything but instead, allow the shopper to donate whatever they could to the cause.   It works out very well with only a...

Okay, it is officially Summer in my part of the world.  Fashion dictates that white shoes and white pants are now acceptable to to be worn.  (I still find myself cringing tho when I see men wearing these and white belts too - shoot me, I'm sexist I know!) We still haven't had the proof that Summer has arrived by way of the weather but we're getting strong hints.  The sun actually shone here yesterday and I did spend the majority of the day outdoors. Which brings me to my topic:  SUNSCREEN  Most people understand the need for this.  Most people know someone who has had skin cancer.  Most people will make sure their children are protected.  Most people DO NOT protect themselves or do not protect themselves adequately! Do you know which SPF to use? Do you know that SPF stands for Sun Prote...

Gananoque, Ontario Lyme Disease is caused by the bite of black legged tick infected wit the bacteria.  You might notice a red rash appearing a few days after the bite.  Sort of like a bulls-eye around the bite. The symptoms of Lyme Disease may include fever, headache, fatigue or muscle and joint pain.  If left untreated, Lyme Disease can progress and affect the nervous system, joints and the heart.  I have a friend who was completely debilitated for months with undiagnosed Lyme Disease.  It can be quite severe! If you have been bitten by a tick, consult your doctor and if you can, save the tick and bring it with you. Protect Yourself from Ticks by: Avoid walking in long grass If you have to be in long grass, wear light coloured clothing with long sleeves, long pants with shoes and socks...

Gananoque, Ontario Do you remember what you were doing last Thanksgiving? (US Thanksgiving that is!)  I remember what I was doing, very clearly . . . I was thankful that we Canadians had celebrated our Thanksgiving in October because this was what was happening outside my front door: If you're interested, this was the blog post I shared on your Thanksgiving Day!   Long story short, burst water main under the street.  No running water and thankfully, no guests arriving for a major meal, lol The water main was not repaired until quite late in the evening, the hole temporarily filled in, But sadly, the heavy equipment operator then passed away quite suddenly. Winter arrived, no work would be done until spring. The snowplows hit that temporary fill with such force, it was shocking that they...

I'm not a huge racing fan but I do love the pomp and ceremony of The Kentucky Derby.  Each year, it has been a tradition of my Mother and I, to celebrate the day together.   Coincidentally, it is usually the first Saturday of the year that we can enjoy my 3 season sun room too. We are surrounded by our tulips, daffodils and forsythia all in bloom.  The lilac leaves and the flowering crab are just coming into bud and, we can pretty much count on SUNSHINE - something long overdue after the Canadian winters we endure! I make tiny little girlie appetizers and we also enjoy the traditional Mint Julip and toast the spring, the flowers, the horses and the silliest of hats we see!   (I have some Royal Wedding style hats for us to wear ourselves while we watch the Derby !!) Just for the record, ...

Gananoque, ON I'm still on my Spring has Sprung - Fresh Aspargus kick  . . .  I hope you're enjoying learning about this wonderful spring vegetable and the many ways you can enjoy it.   And, I have a few more tips for you, from Wikipedia:  "Asparagus has long been recognized for its medicinal properties," wrote D. Onstad, author of Whole Foods Companion: A Guide for Adventurous Cooks, Curious Shoppers and Lovers of Natural Foods. "Asparagus contains substances that act as a diuretic, neutralize ammonia that makes us tired, and protect small blood vessels from rupturing. Its fiber content makes it a laxative, too." Now that you you know more about Asparagus than you probably cared to, I give you a fabulous recipe that my family just adores.  I serve this as a brunch dish too -  I hope yo...

Springtime = fresh local foods such as Asparagus and it seems everyone has a bunch in their grocery cart as they pass by me in the store. I often wonder how each family is preparing theirs? I have been experimenting with Asparagus for many years now because I found too many people believing they didn't enjoy it! It was like the gauntlet was thrown down :0) This dish is a bit more fancy smancy, fiddlee to make but boy oh boy is it tasty too! If you're having company and want to wow them a bit with something a little more out of the ordinary than steamed or grilled asparagus, try this Strudel - it is surely a crowd pleaser! But before we get to that, I had an email from a reader saying they were tempted to buy Asparagus but they wern't too sure how to approach it. So here are a few basic ...
