Paint walls light, change outdated window treatments, add some art, hide all unnecessary items.

Paint I believe is the cheapest update that you can do. Most people don't realize how stale their home looks OR if it's hospital white.

Paint and possibly one accent wall with wall paper.  New Light Fixtures always help too.  Hardwood or vinyl or laminate flooring. Depends on how "affordable" you want to go.  Paint is the most affordable. IMHO Theresa Hus
