Homes for Sale in Lancaster County PA - Columbia feature 95 active listings in July 2012. 16 homes sold in June 2012 and there are currently 24 homes under contract. With only 2.5 months of inventory, one would think the prices would increase, but this does not appear to be the case.          A recent trip to Columbia, Pennsylvania introduced me to a town with many well-preserved buildings.  Above is Wright's Ferry (the original name of the town) Mansion, built in 1738. What you can't see in the picture is the exquisite interior, which is approriately furnished with many 18th century pieces which belonged to the Wright family (no photos allowed). Susanna Wright's father established a ferry across the Susquehanna River, which was once visible from the house. A most interesting place to visit in Lancaster County, PA is the National Clock and Watch Museum in Columbia.   Run by the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, the museum first opened in 1977 with about 1,000 items, but has expanded to over 12,000 items, from the most intricate pocket watches to magnificent granfather clocks and antique animated clocks. Columbia Mayor Leo Lutz announced Oct. 8th that the "Little Prince Silk Mill" site on north 3rd Street has been sold to a Harrisburg-based developer who will attempt to build a "destination business" at the dilapidated site.  The very large building, near to route 30 and clearly visible from major byways, was purchased by Columbia Borough for $825,000 in 2005 with the hopes of reselling it to a hotel chain.  It's a real mess, with crumbling walls and falling bricks - the property is surrounded by a chain link fence to protect passerby.Columbia borough officials were pleased with the sale, which allows them to right to approve what is eventually placed at the site.  Councilpeople commented that the project would bring many new jobs to the town, which sits astride the Susquehanna River an... 10/19/2007

Columbia, PA Bridge Bust Saturday, October sixth, a glorious day in the annals of weather history, was the date of the annual Columbia, PA Bridge Bust. The historic Old Bridge over the Susquehanna River was entirely closed off to traffic between Columbia and Wrightsville.                         The bridge, built in 1930 as a memorial to the sons and daughters of Lancaster and York Counties who served in the wars of their country, is a graceful deco art arched concrete structure. Chickies Rock County Park, Columbia PA Located on Chickies Hill between Marietta and Columbia, PA, Chickies Rock County Park offers some of the most spectacular views of the Susquehanna River available anywhere in the Susquehanna Valley. Located off Route 441, the park starts with a parking area.                                          Walking trails meander west toward the river... Rivertownes PA USA Tour of History Rivertownes PA is a cooperative effort between the Susquehanna River towns of Marietta, Columbia, and Wrightsville. The River Road Historic Excursion is a three hour tour that has been developed by Rivertownes PA USA to showcase the history of the towns on both the Lancaster and York County sides of the Susquehanna River.  A map of the tour is available for $20 From the Susquehanna Valley Visitors Center at Fifth and Linden Streets in Columbia. Churches of Columbia, PA Columbia, PA is known for its historic architecture.  Located along the Susquehanna River, it became a canal shipping center in the 1840s. Later in the 1800s, Columbia was a thriving railroad town.  The wealth that was created in Columbia led to the building of many significant historic homes, a large number of which still exist. This architectural exuberance was reflected as well in the churches of Columbia.  Below is a mural on the Holy Trinity Parish Center. I thought I'd post some photos of wonderful homes along Columbia PA's Locust street.  These are only a sample; you'll have to drive over to see the whole review of homes - it's worth the trip! Almost every architectual style is represented here, from Victorian through Contemporary.   Columbia began life in 1726 as the first European settlers arrived, fifty years before the Revolutionary War.  It was originally called Wright's Ferry, named after John Wright who started his cross-river ferry in 1730 and lived in then-palatial mansion near the water.  Back then, Wrights Ferry was literally on the edge of civilization for the English colonies.  Interestingly, in 1789 it was proposed to bring the new national capital here.  That would be been interesting!
