Holiday Advice from the Gaithersburg Police Department   Dolores and I plan to have a quiet New Year’s Eve at home. If you are going to be out and about, please consider the following advice from the Gaithersburg Police Department. Be careful out there. The life you save may be your own or that of a family member. Happy New Year!   This holiday season, we would like to remind motorists to be careful during this time and should you wish to drink, not to drive.   The Gaithersburg Police Department would like to urge motorists to make alternate plans before driving under the influence.  Law enforcement officers will be out in force, conducting various enforcement initiatives with a focus on impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Please follow these tips to keep the holidays safe and...

Debt Collectors Pursuing Foreclosed Home Owners   Many Maryland residents that lost their homes in foreclosure actions are now being pursued by debt collectors for the leftover debt on their foreclosed homes. When you are broke and face the loss of your home, access to sound legal advice may be elusive. Home owners that thought they would have an opportunity for a fresh start after the foreclosure are now being shocked with collection actions. The collections process includes obtaining a deficiency judgment for the unpaid debt and the compound interest that is attached to the unpaid mortgage obligations. In Maryland, debt collectors have up to 12 years take home owners to court for outstanding mortgage debt after foreclosure. Some Maryland legislators are suggesting a change in the allo...

Just two months ago!   Just two months ago, dahlias were in full bloom in Kentlands. One of the benefits of regular photowalks in the neighborhood is that we can recall those images long after they are gone. We have chilly weather in Maryland and it is pleasant to thinks about beautiful flowers. I hope you don’t mind slipping back to the last season for a moment of reflection.   Dahlias, Kentlands IMG_0180 Dahlia, Kentlands IMG_0452 Dahlia, Kentlands IMG_0609 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Trash Talk in Kentlands   The sounds of this morning in Kentlands were the cawing calls of crows. Evidently, we have a flock of crows visiting the neighborhood. Crows are regular wintertime visitors in Maryland and in urban areas they are best known for ripping open trash bags and making a big mess to be cleaned up by local residents. The Kentlands Citizens Assembly does require residents to use trash cans, with secure lids, rather than just trash bags on collection days. Frequently, surplus trash goes into a bag that is sitting next to the garbage can. The crows are in town and it is time for all to be more diligent with trash disposal. Be sure to use your trash cans rather than the bags that the crows love so much to rip apart. It may be a good time to treat yourself to a new garbage ...

It pays to shop for carpet prices when preparing a home for sale   The cost of replacement carpet is usually a major expense for home owners as they prepare their home to be marketed for sale. It does pay to do a little shopping to find the satisfactory combination of price and the quality of the carpet and pad. Today, we received this price from a local flooring company. The January price is $1.50 per square foot for carpet and upgraded pad, including the installation. This company, of course, is trying to develop continuing relationships for referrals from real estate professionals. Nothing to photograph!   One of my friends in the ActiveRain community commented that there is nothing to photograph in his neighborhood. This was in response to my suggestion to take photowalks through your neighborhood with your camera in hand. I could tell by the comment that he is not an avid photographer. For those of us that are hobby photographers, there is always something to photograph during a neighborhood photowalk. Take a walk and try a little harder to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. Historic Kentlands Mansion   If you follow my blogs, you know that I talk about Kentlands, our home community in Gaithersburg, Maryland, much of the time. This community is the source of many of my photographs. The landmark building in Kentlands is the Historic Kentlands Mansion which was here when the community was still farmland.   Historic Kentlands Manison IMG_2797 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Celebrate your 2013 accomplishments!   It is a very good time to celebrate your 2013 accomplishments in your business and in your personal life. If we focus our attention on the best that we have done, we will know exactly what we need to improve to make 2014 an outstanding year. It may also be a good time to spread some accolades to those that have assisted us along the way. Give some thought to how we may further express our appreciation to family members, friends and co-workers that have supported our efforts. Have we properly recognized those that have contributed to our success? Please share what you have done or plan to do this week to provide deserved recognition for the support and sacrifices of others.   December Colors, Kentlands IMG_2825 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolor...

What do you photograph during December photowalks?   Those that follow my blogs know that I am an amateur photographer and am best known for my flower pictures. In December, there are not many flowers left in our Kentlands neighborhood. What do we photograph? It’s time to check the colors of the plants and the leaves. Look closer for the beauty of nature that surrounds us. Take a walk through your home neighborhood with your camera in hand. If you are like me, you need a little exercise after sampling the wonderful holiday treats.   December Colors, Kentlands IMG_2812 December Colors, Kentlands IMG_2808 December Colors, Kentlands IMG_2811 December Colors, Kentlands IMG_2814 December Colors, Kentlands IMG_2822 Photographs by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

December Colors on a Sunny Day in Kentlands   The clematis blooms are long gone. They were replaced by silky seed pods that are also fun to photograph. Now, the dried remains of the seed pods bask in the December sun. Take a photowalk through your neighborhood to discover the beauty of the season. Snap a picture and you will have a topic for your next blog. Have a wonderful weekend.     December Colors, Kentlands IMG_2826 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Does your home garden include ornamental cabbage?   A number Kentlands residents use ornamental cabbage to add color to their cold weather gardens.”They are able to survive in temperatures as low as five degrees Fahrenheit. They are edible, although they are not as tasty as regular cabbage, and are mainly planted for ornamentation. Since they are low growers, they are often planted as edging plants.” – Barry Solomon.  This is not my personal favorite of plants but I do like the colors. Do you have ornamental cabbage in your garden?  What do you think?   Ornamental Cabbage, Kentlands IMG_2834 Ornamental Cabbage, Kentlands IMG_2832 Ornamental Cabbage, Kentlands IMG_2821 Photographs by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Book Recommendation:  A Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell   I just finished reading A Thread of Grace (2005) by Mary Doria Russell. This is a historical novel that tells some of the stories of the Italian resistance and the underground efforts of Italian citizens that saved the lives of 43,000 Jews during the final phase of World War II. Yes, this is a little more serious reading than my usual suspense novels. As you set your personal goals for 2014, you will do yourself a favor if you commit to reading a novel a week for the next year. You will thank me if you meet this goal.   Books by Mary Doria Russell   Brookside Gardens, Conservatory Display IMG_2600 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Kentlands Seeking Volunteers for Snow Removal   Some of our neighbors in Kentlands are elderly and some of the residents are not well. Please be alert for neighbors that may need help with snow removal. When you help clear the sidewalks, steps and driveways, you are paying it forward and your efforts will be much appreciated. Someday, you or your family members may be among those that need a helping hand. Kentlands Holiday Tree Recycling   When the time comes to remove the ornaments from your Christmas tree and to put it out for City pick up, you need to know that real trees should not be included with your trash collection items. Real trees should be recycled and the following instructions will provide the information you need. If you need to dispose of an artificial tree, that will be an item for trash collection since artificial trees will not be recycled. This is the notice from the Kentlands Citizens Assembly: Please recycle your holiday trees as part of the City of Gaithersburg's weekly recycling program. Simply put the tree out curbside for Thursday recycling day and it will be collected by the City contractor. Please note these helpful reminders: Trees must be in their natural st...

Book Recommendation: Sycamore Row by John Grisham   Just before Christmas, Dolores and I both finished reading Sycamore Row (2013), the latest book by John Grisham. I read a lot of books and must tell you that this is one of the best novels of the year. You will enjoy reading about the challenges of small town Mississippi lawyer Jake Brigance as he represents the estate of Seth Hubbard. You may wish to read The New York Times Book Review. This book is a must for your reading list!   Books by John Grisham   Winter Colors, Kentlands IMG_2552 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Kentlands Photowalk, December Colors   When I take walks through Kentlands, our home community in Gaithersburg, Maryland, I look for the colors of the season. During much of the year, there are flowers to photograph. In December, most of the flowers are gone but there is still much to see when you take notice of the small things provided by nature. Dolores and I had a quiet Christmas Day at home and a wonderful Christmas dinner. Critters, Brandywine River Museum Christmas Ornaments   If you have ever visited the Brandywine River Museum in December, you know about the famous Brandywine River Museum Critters that have a regular place as ornaments on thousands of Christmas trees. “For over three decades, visitors to A Brandywine Christmas have enjoyed enchanting, whimsical "critter" ornaments. Each year in March, the "glue-gun gang" of 120 volunteers begins crafting these delightful ornaments from natural materials. By the opening of A Brandywine Christmas, they will have made nearly 9,000 critters-both for display and for sale.” Explore the links provided in this blog to learn about Critters and this wonderful museum which displays much of the art of the Wyeth family of artists.   Critter Ornament, Brandywine Riv...
