Yesterday I had a request from a buyer to see a property in a tiny town on the Delaware Bay.  Woodland Beach was known prior to 1878 for amusements and frolicking at the beach. Then a tidal wave knocked out 35 miles of waterfront towns.  Today, Woodland Beach is known for fishing and crabbing. One of the yearlong residents has been feeding these ducks for so long that they have their own road warning. The long drive there from nearby Smyrna is lined with flat farmland. The closer you get to Woodland, the road becomes more like a causeway with tidal waters on either side. Due to recent rains, the water comes almost up to the roadway and there are signs warning not to continue if the yellow light is flashing a flooding warning.  But yesterday, the roads were clear and a pleasant drive ens...

It was a perfect day for the annual Market Fair on the Green in front of Delaware's original "Old State House" in Dover. Built in 1791, this was where the Legislature once met in the State Capital.  We began in the State House, where a very serious performance was about to take place with costumed actors in the courtroom portraying Dr. Sykes and Dr. Tilton who shushed me into place in their "waiting room" full of patients. Dr. Tilton brought up "patients" and volunteers to portray makers and mixers of cure elixirs. Unfortunately, the drug turned out to have been stretched out with lead, and the patient got even sicker.  Outside there was a rosier scene on the sun-dappled green.  A musical duo serenaded with tunes from the British Isles.  A bit of cacophony ensued when a dulcimer played ...

It all started when I was doing some yard cleanup today and noticed that my holly tree was full of berries, for the first time in ages. I always thought the birds got there before I did, which is probably part of the reason. Another thing is that although it's been cold, it hasn't been sub-freezing yet, so the birds probably still have the bugs and whatever other living things they feast on in abundance. Then I remembered 2 holly related stories in Delaware lore. The other day, robin brown, who posts photos from the State Archives, posted a photo and story about holly in Delaware on Facebook:  Back in the days before plastic, when real holly was the mainstay of holiday decorations, Delawareans could make quite a bit of money by selling wreaths and boughs. And they didn’t even have to ha...

Yesterday I visited Woodburn, the Delaware Governor's residence in the State Capital, Dover. This home, built c. 1798 by Charles Hillyard III, is one of the finest Middle Period Georgian houses in Delaware.   Decorated for the holidays by a "friends of" group, a guide explained the history of the house to the group of visitors who walked in during the First Saturdays in the First State program, when the residence is open to the public.  There are many lovely antiques and silver pieces in the house, and the dining room was set up with punch and some very yummy homemade cookies. I come here when I get the chance, and it was nice to see the old place again. Governor and Mrs. Carney are not in residence very often, as they have a home in Wilmington.

It's great to live in Central Delaware, right? It's even better to hear that the Real Estate Market is doing better here than in your northern neighbors in New Castle County, isn't it? (photo home is a sold listing)The good news for buyers in Kent County is that new listings were up almost 9% in May, compared to the same period in 2017.  But, being a competitive market, the median sales prices were up 4% this May. The bad news was that the single family detached home inventory was down 20%. Do you get the sense that some strategizing is necessary? If so, you are correct. Contact Carolyn Roland at strategy central to see how to make the most of your money in 2018!

The story of this Historic Delaware Home for Sale is a little out of the ordinary. Little did Thomas Lewis, descendant of Welshman Henry Lewis, know when he built a brick dwelling house in 1772, that 200 years later a Kent County Delaware game warden would buy his house and haul it away, brick by brick. Yet, this is what happened. The home, referred to in an old paper as “Tomahawk,” was reassembled in Hartly, just up the road. Missing windows, doors, and floorboards were replaced with materials from other abandoned homes, the remaining woodwork was restored, and modern amenities were added. The warden added a barn with a large workspace and an apartment on the second floor, as well as a chicken shed and boat shed. The date of construction, 1772, is set into the bricks. A serpentine brick...
