I've got a challenge for you: Name the seven dwarfs from Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. (No Googling it.) I'll give you a second. Time's up. (That's a quick clock.) I got four of them right ~ Happy, Sneezy, Dopey and Grumpy ~ and then went to wikipedia. The remaining three: Doc, Sleepy and Bashful. Okay. Now that we've established that, which dwarf are you most like? (Even if you're not a REALTOR®  you can answer it.) Time's up again. And let's just say you're probably a cross between two of them ~ one major and one minor. Like ~ you're Grumpy (major) and Sleepy (minor): Everybody's walking on eggshells around you and you can't hardly keep your eyes open watching TV at night. You? Not you? Then maybe you're Doc (minor) and Bashful (major): You're (oh so) very smart, but then again you're...

(Warning: A rant coming ~ albeit mild.) In business and real estate circles the so called "law of attraction" gets talked about a lot. In a nutshell, it's the idea that if we think it, it will happen. So, if you're not enjoying much success (let's define "success" here as making boatloads of money), the law of attraction says it's because you've been thinking contrary thoughts. (Yeah, it's all your fault you're not Warren Buffett.) And if you just change your thinking, everything will be all better. (This is the time in the presentation where the guru hawks his book to you.) Now don't get me wrong. It's not that I think that there isn't any truth to the notion of our responsibility when it comes to our own success or lack thereof. Of course, we are responsible. And what's going on in o...

I was literally beaming as I stood there in the family room telling my wife about what happened to me at work. No, the boss didn't pat me on the back or give me a raise or anything like that. Rather, I posted a question on the company Facebook page and got a lot of responses. That's why I was so happy. (It's the "little things" that make a social media specialist's day.) And it's not like I hadn't tried it before - using the Facebook question polling app - except I didn't get much interaction on previous attempts. And so I was a little leery about trying it again. (Yeah, rejection is a big issue even online. "Will anyone respond?" Isn't that something about us?) Despite my fears I moved forward. And I crafted my question (like the gurus tell you to) with my audience in mind (REALTORS®)...

A misjudgment. It's what happens when you have a specific set of data (circumstances) and you judge it to mean such and such ~ and so you proceed based on what you thought it meant only to find out later you were wrong and so now you're in a mess. For example I see a "smile." A "smile" to me means there's happiness there. Right? (That's what a "smile" means.) And so I judge that all is well with the individual who's smiling and so I can just pass him by, wave "Hello" and go my merry way without any problems. Agree? Except the "individual" with the "smile" happens to be a "licking his chops because he hasn't eaten in a week" Grizzly Bear. (Youch!) That's misjudgment. And we may not be making that level of mistake in our judging (let's hope so), but I'd like to suggest that we make misju...

I am a jogger. That's me jogging at Christmas time in the clickable picture (or a very skinny Santa!). I get up in the morning and I run. (Not every morning. I'm getting older.) I've been running now for well over three decades. I've run in the day. I've run at night. I've run in the rain. I've run in the snow (deep snow). I've run in the heat (100s+). I've run in extreme cold. (I think 17 degrees in downtown Minneapolis is still the coldest. We've had some lower 20s that I've run in here in the foothills towards Yosemite.) I've run when I felt good. (I like those days the best.) I've run when I had a pulled muscle in my leg (ouch). I've run with a twisted ankle (double ouch). I've run with a sore neck and bad back. (I know. I should have taken those days off.) I've run and fallen down...

(The gurus will tell you to write like you speak. So here goes...) You ever see those high-wire acts? I haven't in person, but the picture I get (before I found the thumbnail) is of guy in tights climbing a 50 foot ladder, chalking his hands, grabbing a pole, there may or may not be a net below (scary), he steps out on the wire, but there's one thing he must not forget beyond my simple description. (A single word. Starts with a "b." Got it?) Balance. (I know. You had it from the title.) It's the most important thing for a high-wire expert not to forget. It's the most important thing (I'd like to suggest) for us not to forget either. (We're high-wire people, too, many of us, especially if you're a mom of small or teenage kids. Right?) There are some people, their checkbook is out of bal...

(I asked my wife and a friend to read this before posting it "live." They gave me the green light.) Good versus bad. Bad versus good. We deal with it every day. Stock market goes up. Good. Stock market goes down. Bad. Traffic light is green. Good. Traffic light is red. Bad. Slept all night. Good. Had insomnia instead. Bad. (I'm grumpy today because of it.) Got the job. Good. Given the boot. Shown the door. Thrown under the bus. Bad. Bad. Bad. (I love all those analogies except when they're about me.) Hair turns out right. Good (hair day). Hair turns out wrong. Bad (hair day). It can be just about anything that is good or bad at any time, any place and for any one of us. Isn't it true? But is good always "good" and bad always "bad"? (is really the point I want to talk about) Or is good ...
