Rain in June is not the norm for Southern California, but this morning a light rain was falling when I walked Faye, my spunky little Chihuahua. The air was filled with the scent of petrichor. That's the new word I recently added to my vocabulary as it means the smell of rain on the dry earth--and we certainly have plenty of dry earth in the South Bay of Los Angeles due to our relentless drought. The origin of the word is Greek and is a combo of the words for "stone" and "blood of the gods."
