Today is the 100th Anniversary of the opening of the Standard Oil Refinery in the City of El Segundo. Prior to El Segundo's incorporation in 1917, this area was part of the original Spanish land grant for "Rancho Sausal Redondo" ("Ranch of the Round Clump of Willows") in 1822, a rancho with a land mass of nearly 25,000 acres which extended from the areas as far north of what is now Playa del Rey, as far east as Inglewood, and as far south as Hermosa  Beach. The land consisted of wheat and barley fields on which cattle and sheep grazed. El Segundo's early history is described at South Bay History. The El Segundo Rotary Club will hold its 12th annual Movies in the Park event next Saturday August 1st at Chevron Park. The park is located at the corner of Sepulveda and Rosecrans Boulevards and gates will open at 4:00 pm. Tickets are $4, and children ages 2 and younger are free. Kung Fu Panda will be the featured movie. More than 3,000 spectators are expected to enjoy games, activities, food vendors, and a raffle before the movie.
