If you don't have any school-age children in your household, you may not realize that most Anne Arundel County students in grades 1-9 will start school tomorrow, August 25, 2014. Crofton Elementary is the only local school where opening is delayed, but just one day until August 26, when the high school students will also start school. Kindergarteners have a staggered schedule until after Labor Day. Expect slight delays in getting to work as school buses and carpools are on the road again, after a two-month hiatus. Maryland’s public education system ranks first in the nation again this year. Education Week, the College Board and Newsweek Magazine ranked Maryland #1 for the highest percentage of rigorous high schools in America based on the “Challenge Index” developed by the Washington Post.
The “America’s Top High Schools” issue of Newsweek, published last week, listed 98 Maryland high schools among its top 1,622 schools nationwide.
