My wife, Pam, took our three kids to meet some new friends yesterday in Round Rock at the "Rockin' River Family Aquatic Center".  This is her review below.  I think you will begin to see why I love her so much.  Make sure you really read it - you will be entertained.

There are only three things that scare moms more than the prospect of nuclear war:  puberty, permanent markers, and waterparks.

Bearing that in mind, and trying to momentarily forget the scalp laceration I received at a water park when I was a child, I donned my $5 WalMart sunhat, threw about 40 lbs. of gear into the car, and got the kids loaded, all of them chanting, "SWIM-MING!  SWIM-MING!" and headed off to the nearby Rock'n River Family Aquatic Center.  It was only about a 10-minute drive, and I spotted the friends we were meeting there right away.  The cost was only a few dollars per person, so I paid and we went right in.

Noticing that it was pretty crowded, but not dangerously so, I knew I had to get the lay of the place, since it was our first visit.  I said, "Kids, I need to check this place out, so come with me, let's look around," and we went on a mandatory mom-guided exploration of the place.  I was happy to find that there wasn't any water deeper than about 4'6" in the whole place, which was shallow enough for our middle child to be able to keep her head above water easily.  We were ready to let the fun begin, and I propped the baby on my hip so we could keep her safe.

There are four main areas:

A current-driven "river", with clear, vinyl, neon-colored innertubes with handles to float around on.  You can just get in the tube and let the tube carry you along.  It's somewhere between "Ahhh" and "Whee," except when the river takes you under some high-powered "fun" squirters, and then it's a bit like a mini-firehose in the ear!  As we were about to go under them, the baby said, "Mama, I wandoo get swirded."  After:  "Mama, I don' wandoo get swirded."

When we arrived, I was kind of concerned about the river, because my little girl can't really swim.  But there were plenty of innertubes and people in it, and she was fine.  The river was her favorite part.

An open play area including a playscape, with multicolored pipes everywhere, a rope ladder, and many water squirters madly squirting away.  There was also a sort of "lounge" where you could sit and talk to friends on a long, circular bench.  In this area, there is also a model of the original "round rock" that the city of Round Rock is named after, including lots of baby, non-round rocks and a zen-like flowing fountain to make it nice and decorative.  The original round rock is in Brushy Creek.

The kids at the pool seemed pretty well-behaved, and we didn't have any run-ins or social issues at all.  A good crowd.

Two water-park-height water slides, one with an open top, and the other, called the "Black Hole," shaped like a long, dark green Crazy Straw.  My son just loved the water slides, and I stopped worrying about him going on them so often.  He even told me that he went topsy-turvy and tumbled down the "Black Hole," and that he felt a little bruised, but okay.

The baby pool, which the baby did like, although she seemed a bit confused about what she was supposed to do there.  It had a nice, padded bottom (so does the baby) to avoid scratching the little guys' feet or bumping their heads.  The baby pool is also shaded, which I took note of for future sunny days.  Shade is imperative for light-skinned people like us.  The baby wouldn't go near the playscape, because it had a sort of rumbling sound coming from it, probably from the water being pumped through.

I was very impressed by how many lifeguards there were.  Also, the lifeguards seemed fairly low-lethargy, which can be an unfortunate issue for some lifeguards.  I guess I don't blame them, though.  I'd probably fall asleep from sitting in the sun all day.

The only thing I would change about this aquatic center is to maybe make everything easier to see.  We moms each lost track of our kids about 5-10 times.  Mostly, the kids would finish one thing and just run off to the next thing that caught their eye, is if they were having "fun," or some junk.  But, everyone was safe, so it worked out fine.

After we'd played for a couple of hours, we sat down in our towels to talk to our friends and share some of the snacks they'd brought.  We had some really good conversation, and had a lot to talk about, since they're homeschoolers, as well.  We talked about our kitten, who is training to be a toe ninja at the toe-jo, and is receiving special forces training to be able to spot suspicious patches of thin air.  We learned about what it's like to clean up after a rabbit (bleah) and talked about homeschooling co-ops.

We ended up by agreeing to meet at one of our homes the next time, to make it a little less stressful on moms.  But today the kids were begging to go again, so, maybe we'll go back next week!  Overall it was a fun, safe time.

I love these water parks Jason Pam. So much fun for families and the variety of slides and fountains always amazes me along with the "lazy rivers." We had more of them in Arlington until they consolidated but they also built other ones in North Texas in Garland and Denton. Sounds like you and the family had a great time. I always liked it when they turned the wave pool on.

What fun!  Brought back memories - we use to go with our kids, their friends and with the youth groups at our church to Raging Waters in California.  What a blast we use to have!

Sounds as if you all had a blast and a few memories were made along the way.

I love the commentaries brings me back to my fun days!  My youngest is now 14, with the oldest being 24.  Now all I get to hear is MOTH-ER!!!  Can I just hear the chant of SWIM-MING one more time?  Now the only thing they get excited about is video games and boyfriends/girlfriends....

It sounds like a great time Pam and I really could relate to your feelings of concern about the place.  My kids are older now but I remember those days and still want to do a Mom Tour of places before I want to let them go (not that they always cooperate willingly mind you)  I love the way you write from your heart.  Have a great 4th!

Hi Pam,
How did you wrestle the computer away from Jason long enough to write this post?  LOL!

Kids love waterparks, I remember that I did as a child.  Sounds like you had a great day.  I bet you'll be going back soon.  Take Jason with you next time and let him watch the kids while you cool it.

Good morning Pam,

I was surprised to not even hear read aword about Jason being with you.  I know that somebody has to work but think about taking him next time to take the palce of the "fairly low-lethargy" lifeguards.  He always seems to have a lot of energy!

Have a Happy & Safe 4th.

It sounds like they had a pretty good time.  I took 4 of my kids to the Six Flags water park last week.  My husband usually does this with the bigger kids each year, but this year, my youngest really wanted to go.  I thought it best that I go to keep an eye on the little guy.  I really didn't like it.  Long lines, hot, expensive, and it didn't feel like a safe place for small kids.

Pam & Jason, I loved the post! Living in Florida, we have a similar park called Wet & Wild, where I was a lifeguard when I was in high school! Yikes, I'd hate to have that job now :)

Sounds like your family had tons of fun and you've made memories that will last a lifetime...enjoy them while you have them as they grow up way to fast!

Happy 4th!

Now if that wasn't a trip down memory lane!  I remember those days................both fun and petrifying at the same time........hmmm fortunately now the kids all swim ...........and umm I don't think they're doing water parks these days............20+  :-) they go to Hawaii instead, lose there cell the first day and they're lost for 2 weeks...!......and NO lifeguards :-(o

I took my 4 children to a place similar to that one many years ago.  My husband wasn't with me, but I had a friend with me and she brought her two young children.  I spent the entire time counting heads, "One, two, three....four, five.....six.  One, two......three, four........five, six...." You get the picture.

At one point, I lost my youngest (he was about 4 years old at the time).  I'll never forget how panicked I was.  I prayed that I'd find him...Eventually, I found him with a life guard.  She had pulled him out of the pool as he had gone down this GIGANTIC slide.  Praise the Lord!  I was so thankful to see him!

Needless to say, I haven't gone to an area like that again without my husband along...  :)

We have a water park near us also.  Living in Hawaii we have so many great beaches that the water park is not as important as in other parts of the country.

My kids are wanting to go back, but we haven't made it yet.  We had passes one year and spent the entire summer going every Tuesday but that was back when summer was 12 weeks or so.  Glad you had a great time.  Thanks for taking the time to share your family with us.

Pam and Jason,

Talk about a trip down memory lane with our nieces and nephews that loved the Water Parks!  It seemed like they hardly ever got tired.  There is so much to juggle when you have three kids.  It was so informative and what a charming perspective from a mother!  Yes, we are the ones multitasking and making sure everyone is okay.  Sounds like your kids had a blast! Good for you and the kids.  Thank you for sharing us your adventure!  Makes me want to go to a water park soon, too!

Have a Colorful Day!

LOL Pam, Sounds like a great park but I laughed as I re-call yelling over & over to my girls ( now adults) many years ago at a water park - walk, don't run, walk please, the rides will wait, they are going nowhere....ah enjoy this mild stress and the days of youth....driver's ed is around the corner:)

Sincerely,

Grace
