Celebrate the Day…We Love Receiving Them There are a few things in life that are always welcomed…a smile, a hug, and a true compliment.  Today is National Compliment Day.  Personally, I don’t think we hand them out as much as we should.   I’m not talking about the “nice hair cursory” compliment. It’s too much like the “cursory hug and go.” But paying someone a compliment that lets the receiver know you took notice of their work or an accomplishment or even something about them…THIS shows them that you have given it some thought.  Just as a smile, hug, or act of kindness is a two-way street, so is giving someone a compliment. Your kind word can lift their spirit…it can motivate them to be better and do more. And even better, when you give this gift you get back so much in return. It’s a ...

The real estate boom appears to be over for now. Morgan Stanley predicts that house prices could fall by 10 percent by the end of 2024, perhaps twice as much in a worst-case scenario. Homeowners who purchased their homes at the top of the market could be in trouble, especially if the U.S. falls into a recession. No homeowner wants to go through foreclosure and its credit rating destruction. Fortunately, there is an alternative: a short sale.In a short sale, homeowners sell their home in a regular sale through a real estate agent for less than the amount of their mortgage. The lender accepts the sale proceeds, releases the mortgage lien on the property, and typically writes off the remainder of the loan as an uncollectible debt.Lenders agree to short sales only where it’s clear that the h...

Sometimes debts can pile up beyond a borrower’s ability to repay, especially if we are heading into a recession. But lenders are sometimes willing to cancel (forgive) debts that are owed by financially challenged borrowers. While a debt cancellation can help a beleaguered borrower survive, it can also trigger negative tax consequences. Or it can be a tax-free event.  General Rule: COD Income Is TaxableWhen a lender forgives part or all of your debt, it results in so-called cancellation of debt (COD) income. The general federal income tax rule is that COD income counts as gross income that you must report on your federal income tax return for the year the debt cancellation occurs. Fortunately, there are a number of exceptions to the general rule that COD income is taxable. You can find t...

Speechless Sundays - Reflections of MaddieOur sweet Maddie loves riding around with her daddy - especially when he leaves the bedroom as she can catch a ride directly from the bed (which has a ramp for her to get onto the bed). ANYWAY, as many times as she's been on Ray's lap, leaving the bedroom, she's never paid attention to the mirror on the wall.Well, today, she discovered that mirror on the wall...and her reflection. I wish I had seen the entire experience and caught the video but, it was absolutely adorable! She was licking the mirror and all excited to 'meet' the doggie in the mirror!***BTW, you're seeing her diaper in the mirror with her cute little curly tail! She became a little lady this week and has to wear a diaper for a few days. We waited to have her spayed until a month ...

Motivational Monday…Will You Experience the “Yes” Have you ever watched a game…basketball, football, basketball…where the score was definitely one-sided?   Time is running out and you wonder how the losing team can continue to play.  And yet, play after play, they keep trying.   If you’ve ever watched Tom Brady play, then you know that he can be down 2 scores with 2 minutes left to play and still come back and win. (It’s true) It’s about giving up…or in his case…not giving up.  If we want something badly enough, then we have to be willing to experience rejections and misses. Whatever you want, if you feel like giving up, then you’ll never get to experience what it’s like when you finally get that “YES!”  Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always ...

Yesterday I changed my oil because it was "Spring Like" at 25 degrees above zero. Today was almost Summer like at 34 degrees above zero. So today was my son Timmothy's turn (that's the cartoonist). It was the 1st oil change on his (new to him) first car. It's a 2011 Nissan Rogue. We are hoping it's a great car for him. The last Nissan I owned was over 30 years ago and it was a Dotson. In fact I owned several Dotson's and they were great cars. One thing I will say about the Toyota oil change yesterday and the Nissan oil change today as the foreign car engineers are sure a lot more "user friendly" then the American cars when it comes to oil changes. As far as when will Spring and Summer really come to Minot ND, probably towards the end of May. Next weekend the projected high for Saturday is ...

If you have read any of my posts, you probably know - I work, so I can TRAVEL!    So, with all my adventures over the years, I have picked up maps and some pamphlets from areas of interest, which I keep in folders labeled for the State.  Some folders are larger than others - like California, which I have been to many times, as it does take a while to see the whole state.    I had to create some new folders with some of my past trips - North & South Carolina, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and some Canadian provinces.  I actually had to make another box that was larger with the additions.   It probably is time to sift through some of the folders, and eliminate some duplications. It sure is nice to take a trip (like to Tucson), and pull out the maps I would need along the routes.  (I do hav...
