This past July, I attended the Greenbrier Valley Theatre's art auction, which is GVT’s largest annual fundraiser, I was lucky enough to bid on a painting by Mary Hurst and to take it home.     Young women from High Rocks,  came out to support High Rocks alum and future Habitat for Humanity homeowner Kristina Shirley at Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity’s Summer Elms development, the site of Habitat’s Women Build house and Kristina Shirley’s future home. Kristina Shirley is a 22-year-old single mom in the Army Reserves who grew up in Williamsburg, WV and attended Greenbrier East High School.  She has a two year old boy, Bradley, an energetic child who loves sports.     Progress continues for the Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build house in White Sulphur Springs, WV, with the help of young volunteers during the week of May 28- June 1.  Habitat's theme for this year, “The Build Generation,” reflects the event’s goal to recruit and train volunteers, as well as welcome the next generation of Habitat Women/Men Builders – ages 18-24 – to support Habitat’s mission to create affordable housing.  Young volunteers from Pennsylvania and Virginia have been paying it forward and helping build a home for the month of June. Progress continues for the Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build house in White Sulphur Springs, WV, during the week of May 21-25. The volunteers from Youth Build in Huntington, WV, completed laying the footers, pouring concrete and installing the insulated concrete forms.  The volunteers were Johnny Stoker, 19, Richard Lee Lambert, 21, and their three instructors, Michael Murphy, Mark Jarrett, and Michael Anderson.   The volunteers worked really hard and even poured the concrete for the foundation of another Habitat house next to the Women Build house.   The 2012 West Virginia Dandelion Festival is scheduled for Memorial Weekend in White Sulphur Springs, WV.  The Festival will kick off on Thursday, May 24th with an art show and wine and cheese reception and will continue through Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th.   In celebration and appreciation for the determination of the dandelion.   The 15th National Hickory Championship (NHC) will be held  at the historic Oakhurst Links in White Sulphur Springs, WV, near the famous Greenbrier Resort, June 7-9, 2012.Oakhurst Links is America’s oldest documented golf course, first played in the early 1880s. It is the site of America’s first recognized golf competition, the Oakhurst Challenge. The first organized golf club in America was in West Virginia.  It all started in 1884, when a group of Scottish, English and American gentlemen gathered to play a game new to the United States.  They laid out a nine hole course......the game, of course, was golf. On Saturday, May 12, volunteers arrived at Habitat’s Summer Elms development at 9:00 AM to start on the Second Women Build house in White Sulphur Springs, WV. The Greenbrier is offering a fun way to support local non-profit organizations through its Casino Charity Weekend, March 16-17.  Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT) is one of four local organizations participating in the event, which allows individuals to purchase weekend casino passes for $20, a fee that goes straight to the theatre.
