  Every third Saturday in October the New River Gorge Bridge closes to traffic and opens for the largest one day festival in West Virginia. Spectacular views, BASE Jumpers, and vendors offering food and crafts.  October 20, 2012.....makes the 33rd year for Bridge Day.  Bridge Day is a celebration of the New River Gorge Bridge, the area, and the fall season.    The dedication ceremony of the new bridge was October 22, 1977, and the public was allowed to walk on and view this magnificent structure and its beautiful  surroundings. The answer is Yes! That is if it is Bridge Day at the New River Gorge Bridge, the third largest arch bridge in the world, in West Virginia. Come October 15, 2011 people will do that as we celebrate the 32nd Annual Bridge Day. Every year approximately 80,000 people flock to the Route 19 New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, West Virginia to watch as brave folks B.A.S.E. jump and rappel off a platform almost 900 feet above the river below. This is the only day you are legally allowed to B.A.S.E jump (parachute off fixed items) off the bridge. Surprisingly in over 30 years, there have only been 3 deaths.
