The Secret Passageway Between Bond Lake and Leader Lake, Wascott, WI Here’s another in an occasional series of posts answering the question: “Can I really get there from here?” Here in Northwest Wisconsin, maps often show a connection between two lakes, and fising guidebooks may mention a “navigable channel.” But can you really get there from here? The answer, of course, is “it depends.” First, it depends on the size of your boat. How much water does it draw, how wide is it, and how tall is it? If your boat has an awning or visor, can it be folded down? In some cases, the weather and the time of year can even make a difference. If the water is too low, there won’t be enough to float your boat. Too high, and you may not have quite enough headroom under a bridge. So your mileage, as they ...

Bond and Leader Lakes, Wascott, Wisconsin Bond Lake This 293-acre lake is located in south-central Douglas County.  It has a shoreline of 3.84 miles, a maximum depth of 67 feet, and Secchi disk readings of around 20 feet.  In it, you’ll find northerns, walleyes, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and panfish.  According to the DNR, this deep, clear lake is a trophy northern pike fishery. The lake isn’t heavily developed, and most homes are set back enough so they’re barely visible from the water.  It’s a relatively quiet lake, and most of its homes are in the middle and upper price ranges. Leader Lake This 160-acre lake is located in south-central Douglas County.  It has a maximum depth of 56 feet.  In it, you’ll find northerns, walleyes, largemouth bass, and panfish.  Although the lake ...

Compared to most other lakes in northwestern Wisconsin, 832-acre Whitefish (Bardon) Lake is different in two ways.  First, although a number of homes have been built on the lake, special setbacks, buffers, and other shoreland zoning ordinances have done much to preserve the lake’s natural and scenic beauty.  From most locations on Whitefish Lake, Douglas County Wisconsin, you’ll be able to look out across a huge expanse of water whose shore appears largely uninhabited.  The lake is wild enough, in fact, so that eagles and loons are spotted frequently. Second, the lake is deep, cold, and oligotrophic.  According to the DNR, it has a maximum depth of 102’ and a mean depth of 30 feet.  Over 60% of the lake is deeper than 20’, and less than 4% is less than 3’ deep.  Secchi disk readings ave...

Wascott - Douglas County Wisconsin Wascott is located on the very southern edge of Douglas County, bordering Washburn County. With more than 100 pristine lakes to fish, swim and boat, the possibilities for recreation are endless.  Experience the wonders of nature while you canoe down the St. Croix, Namekagon, Totogatic, or Eau Claire Rivers.   The town of Wascott came into being around the year 1910. It was named after railroad company president, W. A. Scott. Between 1906 and 1908 the Soo Line Railroad came through Wascott, connecting Chicago and Lake Superior. The demand for wood brought the big lumber companies to the area. The last log drive went down the St. Croix in 1912.   Visit Wascott Wisconsin online at www.visitwascott.com

If your dream is to live in the country, or on a lake, and commute to work in the city, Douglas County in NW Wisconsin offers big woods and many clear, deep lakes within commuting distance to Duluth or Superior. Highway 53 is a 4-lane freeway that connects Duluth/Superior to Eau Claire. It’s a good road and even in the winter months, the plows and sanding trucks respond immediately to keep travel safe during winter storms. Many friends and neighbors in the Gordon and Wascott communities work in Duluth; they claim it’s a 45-minute drive without the stress of big-city traffic. There are many large lakes within this 45-minute commuting zone including Lake Nebagamon, Upper Lake St Croix, The St Croix Flowage, Whitefish Lake, and even the northern end of the Minong Flowage. There are also ex...
