Welcome Back UWSP Students 2017-18  Old Main, Like a bit of Harvard in Wisconsin  Old main is the oldest building on campus and always reminds me of our roots dating back nearly 120 years to when Stevens Point was selected as a Normal school or teaching college.  Old main reminds me of the Harvard campus with old buildings that are hard to photograph due to a plentitude of large dense trees.  These trees came in handy 30+ years ago when I had Dendrology class at UWSP and many of the trees that we had to identify from across the nation were only found on the lawn in front of this building.  Now these trees enhance the beauty of this fine old building which is now used as the executive office building for folks like the Chancellor.More Welcome Back to Uwsp Tour Posts     Check out the new...

Welcome Back UWSP Students to the 2017-18 School YearWelcome back to the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, school starts this week and the town is buzzing with activity.  I have seen several groups heading down to Belts for a welcome ice cream break with old and new friends, and today many houses had yard parties as people gathered to reacquaint with old friends and meet a few more before the busy life of classes begins. For those who do not have housing secured, we have a few more homes available we just finished cleaning and repairs on.  And if anyone needs a couch or other misc. furniture, I seem to be developing a collection in one of my garages that I would like to get rid of soon.Jack and I took a walk around campus today and took a few pics of the buildings, people and art...

National Ice Cream Day!!  Time for a trip down to Belts Ice Cream to Celebrate. No trip to Central Wisconsin is complete without a stop at Belts Ice Cream  Belts Ice Cream is one of our favorite attractions drawing visitors from around the state with their huge cones and other delicious treats.  I was pleased to see long lines of folks waiting for their treat as I drove by earlier today.  I enjoy Belts as much as anyone and am pleased to be living only a few blocks from it, and always use in the description line when advertising the many homes that I rent in this part of town. And today it is nice to have an extra reason today to stop by and enjoy a special treat from this must have Wisconsin Attraction.

Stevens Point Wisconsin, I love this town, and so will you!   I first came to this town 35 years ago when I started college here.     It was a culture shock for me coming from a rural farm near a small town of 800 people.  At the time it seemed like a much larger metropolis than it seems to be today.     After 6 years of college I grew to love the city of Point and hated to leave to start my career, but everybody has to grow up and leave sometime.   A decade after starting my Forestry Consulting Company in Western Wisconsin, I was looking to expand and what better place than the home of the largest and most prestigious Forestry school in the country, UW Stevens Point, and the place that I had grown to love so much when I was a student there.     So my wife found a new and better teachin...

Stevens Point Rentals FAQ: Are Utilities Included?   From: jody ] Sent:  May 14 6:54 PMTo: Subject: - $699 / 3br - 3 bedroom, near campus, hospital, and MSTC (Stevens Point, WI)   Are utilities included?   Thank you, Jody -----------------------------------------------------------------------   Hi Jody, Thank you for your interest in our home on Ellis St. We do not pay our tenants utilities for several reasons. First, landlords who do pay their tenants utilities need to make up for this wasted expense by raising the rent to a rate that is higher than the rent plus anticipated utilities. Second and more importantly, it is very bad for the environment when a landlord pays their tenants utilities. Utilities in these homes generally are consumed at a rate significantly higher than homes wh...

Good Friday 2017 in Stevens Point If you find yourself in the Stevens Point Area on Good Friday, April 14th - here are some of the services you will be able to attend.Commemoration of the crucifixion, passion and death of Jesus Christ which includes, scripture, prayer and veneration of the Cross.  There is not a Mass said on Good Friday, but rather a service which has been in practice in the Catholic Church since the seventh century. This adoration of Christ’s cross, is shown in the form of kneeling before the crucifix and kissing it, as a belief that this is the tool bringing us our salvation. Noon                     Holy Spirit Parish 12:15                     St. Peter’s Parish 12:30pm              St. Joseph’s Parish                                 St. Stephen’s Parish  3:00pm     ...

Washing of the Feet, a Powerful Message. One of the most impressive traditions of Holy Week is the commemoration of Jesus washing the feet of his apostles. Churches all over the world hold a mass or ceremony in remembrance of this. In many churches, they choose representatives of the different people involved in church and the priest washes their feet. In our church, we get our feet washed by the person in front of us in line, we then in turn wash the feet of the person behind us in line. This is quite a humbling experience.Pope Francis himself will continue this tradition. On Holy Thursday, he will say the Mass of the Last Supper at Paliano Prison and was the feet of the inmates. This is not the first time that our Pope visited a penitentiary and was the feet of the people there. Shortly...

Polish Easter Blessing of Food At noon on Saturday April 15, there will be a blessing of food. This is a polish tradition known asświęcenie pokarmow wiełkanocnych. A basket of food your family will eat for Easter dinner can be brought in to St Joseph’s Church and blessed in a simple ceremony.   This blessing of the baskets dates back to the 15th century. This tradition is still practiced by most families in Poland, on Holy Saturday. Since there is a large number of Polish families in Stevens Point, some of these religious traditions are observed in our area as well.   photo credithttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:4SederFoods.JPG

Stevens Point Good Friday Walk There are so many opportunities to meditate on the events of Holy Week. One of my favorite activities is the Good Friday Walk. To commemorate Jesus final walk carrying his cross, we walk through Stevens Point. We stop at 14 various locations to pray for people in need there. Some of the stops I remember from previous years are: University to pray for the students, the hospital to pray for the ill, the fire and police stations to pray for those who help others in need.   When we stop at Franciscans Downtown, we take a break, to have coffee and visit with the people who are there. The walk starts and ends at St. Joseph’s Parish. It begins at 3:00 pm Friday, April 14. A very memorable experience to walk and think about all the lives that Jesus has touched.   ...

Seder Meal – St. Joseph’s Parish   At 5:30 pm St Joseph Parish will hold a potluck meal. Recounting the suffering of slavery and then freedom for the Israelites, in ancient Egypt. Although this Seder meal will not have all the traditional elements – it still serves to remind us of the suffering and evil in our world, and how God promises us something better.A traditional Seder meal has a plate of several symbolic foods: Roasted lamb - to symbolize the paschal lamb Karpas – a green vegetable to represent spring Charoset – apples, walnuts, wine and cinnamon chopped and mixed together to stand for the mortar the Hebrew slaves made Maror – a bitter herb reminding us of the bitterness of slavery Hard-boiled egg – showing springtime and renewal Salt water – the tears of enslavement. There are...
