I wrote earlier about this Tumwater, WA renovation project that ended up being VERY extensive - and now it is finally completed, and on the market for sale.  And looking absolutely beautiful!  Those Guys Construction have outdone themselves...again...with a home that is now structurally sound, much more energy efficient, and that looks as if you have walked into a new house instead of one from the early '60's.   This house has amazing street appeal, but that is just the first part of the good things in store here.  It's hard to even remember how tiny and non functional the original kitchen was when you see the spacious finished version!  New cabinets, counters, floors, sink, lighting, appliances....and you can even gaze out the window at the flowered branches in the side yard.   The liv...

Tumwater Falls Park in Tumwater, Washington offers a cool respite from warm summer days.  The rolling water over the falls washes away the bustling town noise, and offers a quiet and relaxing getaway. Two trails flank the Deschutes River at the Falls.  Along the way, there are scenic views of the native plants and the salmon fish ladder.  The Deschutes River flows over the falls and ends its long journey from the Cascade mountain range at Capitol Lake.

I'm having fun watching the progress at the latest renovation project by Those Guys Construction on this house on Lee St in Tumwater WA.  When my investor bought it as an estate owned property, it was definitely in need of some repairs & rehab work.   The house needed new roof and gutters, and inside a long time leaking hot water heater in the corner of the kitchen had caused really extensive damage to the entire center of the house.      As Those Guys Construction began the demolition phase, the extent of the damage opened an opportunity to reconfigure the floor plan in a way that makes this house much more open and functional.     What used to be a front door opening to a large laundry room got completely changed so that the new front door brings you into an entry way looking back int...

Everyday I receive emails about the latest and greatest schemes, plans and products that will skyrocket my business and income.  Today was no different.  I received an email that promised if I purchased this lead-generating program, I would be able to make $1 million in one year.  Wow!  That’s amazing!  For just $399, I could get the keys to this secret program!  Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?!  But this magical program for $399 is not going to make anyone successful, except for the guy offering the program!    My secret to success is to work on improving myself.  I know we’ve all heard this before, but it’s true.  If you can improve yourself, you will definitely improve your business.  This takes a little more work than purchasing a miracle program, but it is far more effective. I’ve bee...

Tumwater Falls Park is one of my favorite places to go this time of year, since the salmon coming up the Deschutes River to spawn can be viewed up close (close enough to get splashed!).  Once the salmon make their journey in thru Budd Inlet, across Capitol Lake, and up the Deschutes River with its fish ladders for a little assist, they are brought into big tanks.  The salmon are counted and eggs are harvested - and those splashing, jumping fish give an up close & personal look at this amazing life cycle.   Tumwater Falls Park also has trails along the river where you can admire the waterfall (it might splash you just a little too if there's a breeze blowing the mist your direction).   And if the kids get tired of watching leaping salmon & waterfalls, Tumwater Falls Park has concrete...

Tumwater Falls Park, Tumwater WA, this time of year is a really special place to visit - the path along the river is always beautiful and the waterfall itself is too.  But this time of year you get the added excitement of seeing the salmon that have come up the Deschutes river to spawn.   It always just boggles my mind that salmon can do this - what a long trek they make from ocean, up through Capitol Lake, then up the Deschutes River. The fish ladders assist them up the river - but jumping up the steps of the ladder is no piece of cake either!  Often you can see several salmon swirling around in the water at the foot of the fish ladders, resting up for the effort. Once they are funneled through the gate and up the final set of fish ladder steps, they are gathered into these holding tan...

Deschutes Animal Clinic in Tumwater, WA has been in business since 1943, caring for animals from small to large.  They have been our family vet of choice since the mid-1970's, and I trust them totally with the care of our dogs and cats.  The six vets on staff are knowledgeable and keep up to date on all the latest diagnostic and treatment research.  The clinic is open Monday thru Saturday, and they are equipped to do x-rays, ultrasound, blood work etc for diagnosing your pet; surgery when needed; dental work; even boarding while you are on vacation. Their location near the airport in Tumwater is not close to our house - not at all.  But the care our animals have always gotten there is so awesome that the extra mileage is well worth it for our peace of mind, and the professional, thor...

OK - coming up is your chance to see LOTS of yellow rubber duckies dash down the Deschutes River in Tumwater, WA - and maybe win you a prize!  This will be the 21st annual Lacey Rotary Duck Dash and it sure is a good time for young and old, as well as a fun way to donate to a number of local charity and community improvement projects. The event begins at 11 AM on Saturday June 5th, and Tumwater Falls Park will have food, music, Kids World with face painting, fishing pond, arts & crafts, ducky masks & puppets, inflatable bouncy toys - even a free bicycle drawing.  So there will be lots to see and do while you wait for the big moment at 4 PM when the rubber duckies get tipped into the river!    And if your duck is one of the first to cross the finish line, you could win a great prize ...

Tumwater, WA was first called New Market, but the Chinook Indian word for waterfall gave it the name Tumwater.  Pretty fitting since the city sits on the Deschutes River with Tumwater Falls Park providing space to play, watch the salmon return up the river to spawn, and walk the river trail to watch the cascading water.   In the 1950's, Tumwater saw another route run through it as the I-5 freeway cut right through the city to create the current freeway corridor that runs all the way from California to the Washington/Canadian border.  The highway construction permanently separated the area known as Tumwater Hill from the other side of the freeway where the Tumwater Brewery sat.

Don't miss the cool upcoming 4th of July celebration in Tumwater!  It starts off with a big parade at 11 AM on July 4th - parade starts at the corner of Capitol Blvd and Lee St & continues to right by City Hall on Israel Rd.  This year the theme for the parade is "Everyday Superheroes" & expect to see classic cars, dance teams, horses & more. Later in the day (starting at 6 PM) is the Tumwater Artesian Festival & big fireworks show!  These are sponsored by the Tumwater Downtown Association & admission is free!  The event is held at Tumwater Valley (enter through the north gate of the golf driving range).  Lots of fun for the whole family with music, food, fun stuff for kids from face painting to magic performances, from martial arts demonstrations to a climbing wall, obstacle course and...

Have you come across the term "New Urbanism"? Not sure what it means? It refers to the new concept that is actually an old concept, of living in close proximity to the city. Communities used to naturally develop around a city core, but then extended into suburban sprawl. With land getting sparser, traffic getting denser and the cost of gas going higher, the idea of living in the city is gaining popularity again. The city offers amenities that are easily reached by public transportation or by foot, smaller yards with low maintenance, and close proximity to neighbors. Since lots in the city are small and priced at top dollar, "urbanism" almost always means smaller homes and multi level building. The advantages of this are lower energy costs and less home maintenance. Other positive side ...

What do these structures have in common?                                                  You'll probably note the brick facade and the verdigris copper pyramid hip type roof. People from the greater Olympia area will quickly recognize that these structures all resemble the Old Brew House. These buildings are all located in the small city of Tumwater, and if you drive around Tumwater and pay attention, you'll discover many more buildings with the same style. They all pay homage to the original historic Tumwater landmark: The Old Brew House.                                                                          The Brew Houses is a five-story Italianate building, constructed from Chehalis brick and Tenino sandstone. The Old Brewhouse is the oldest industrial property in the South Pug...
