Pioneer Square (Seattle, WA)
About Pioneer Square (Seattle, WA)
Pioneer Square is one of Seattle oldest and historic neighborhoods. It was the second place that early Seattlelites ultimately decided to call home (after Alki) and has been witness to our growth ever since. Pioneer Square is comprised of charming old stone buildings with an intriguing underground below it and the lofts here are phenomenal.

I got a chance to stop into the Smith Tower again yesterday and can never really get tired of exploring it... It is just fabulous and worth a stop if you are in Seattle. I would highly recommend stopping in. It is inexpensive to go to the observation deck which encompasses the entire building and offers some of the best views in Seattle from the West Coast's first skyscraper. Here are some more photos I took. Weather was not great, but clear enough to get a few nice outdoor shots of Downtown Seattle and Pioneer Square. Here are the interiors I got of some of the details including the elevator panel and the mail chute which, by the way, is still actively used by clients!!! The post office picks up from here once a day. It has a chute that comes down from all the floors above and into the...

Pioneer Square, located in the Southwest corner of Seattle and developed back in 1852. Long ago it was the location of a lumber mill owned by Henry Yesler. Much of the area is landfill and when you visit Seattle you must experience the Underground Tour. Schedule to walk with an informed tour guide and learn about Pioneer Squares history and see the original storefronts that are now below modern street levels which is a result of earth grading to raise the level of the land to prevent plumbing from backing up during high tide and flooding due to Pioneer Square being built on tidelands.    The early structures in Pioneer Square were mostly made out of wood which burned down in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team, is located in Pioneer ...

The Space Needle is not the only iconic building here in town. The first Grande Dame of Seattle skyscrapers was the Smith Tower, completed way back in 1914. For nearly 50 years, she was the tallest building west of the Rockies. The building is named after Lyman Cornelius Smith, industrialist and inventor (1834 - 1910). He was 'the Smith' of Smith and Wesson Firearms and Smith and Corona Typewriters. The current owner, Walton Street Capital out of Chicago, defaulted on their $42.5 million loan this past year. The loan was acquired by CBRE Group (formerly known as CB Richard Ellis, Inc) for an undisclosed amount and the auction is set for March 23, 2012. Talk about being upside down. The current assessed value was set for this year by the King County Assessor’s office is $21.3 million. Wa...
