It's always good to see new businesses opening in Moses Lake. A new one joins the brisk downtown business district called "The Mantel". The specialty store offers 25 different handmade candle scents with more choices on the way, says Tiffany Cole, one of the store's owners. Located at 124 E. Third Ave  Suite 203 with regular hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. "It's been a passion of mine for probably three years," Cole says. "All of the candles in our store are handmade. I've been working on them anywhere from three to five years."The store is unique to Moses Lake, she noted. Cole also explained she thought it would be a good business to open because of the need. She mentioned the efforts of co-owner Lorinda Quick, who also works at the business to help Cole. Cole a...

The job outlook continues to improve in Moses Lake. Genie Industries, one of Moses Lake's larger employers, plans to move a telehandler manufacturing line from Baraga, Mich., to here in early 2010, the company recently announced. It is part of a consolidation where production line will be staffed with existing employees in Moses Lake, according to Melinda Zimmerman-Smith, a company spokesperson for the aerial lift manufacturer."Adding volume to any plant is always positive. The telehandler market is partially related to the residential housing market, she stated."As the housing market returns to growth, then the volume requirements for telehandlers will increase," she stated.  "Having those products in Moses Lake means increasing volumes in the future for that facility.Genie Industries ...

As I've written before about the airport in Moses Lake, WA you should know about the amazing runway we have for out at the airport.  For years now there have been rumblings every now and again about Boeing coming to Moses Lake most recently in the last month regarding Boeing and the new 787 program.  Of course the alternate proposal for that is also South Carolina.  If we look at thelikelihood of Boeing moving that program here it would not be likely.  Although we do have one of the longest runways and some of the cheapest electricity rates in Washington State we can't compete with the fact that South Carolina is not a labor union state. Boeing has slowly over the past 7 years been pulling out of our state and we seem to turn our backs and pretend it isn't happening.  No matter what the...

The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife reports the following: Hunting: Waterfowl season runs Oct. 17-21, then picks up again Oct. 24 - Jan. 31 - a gap that allows for the two-day September youth waterfowl hunting season within the federal framework for migratory bird hunting.  WDFW waterfowl specialist Mikal Moore of Moses Lake reports ducks are moving into the Columbia Basin in ever-increasing numbers, thanks to unseasonably cold temperatures bringing ducks out of their molting and staging areas a little early.  "Cold temperatures mean higher energy demands for ducks," Moore said. "When scouting for your opening day spot, check the water for abundant floating seeds - a good calling card for hungry ducks. Some areas with excellent natural seed production include shallow water area...

Norco opened an air separation plant in Moses Lake last week. I wondered what "air separation" could mean. Research took me to the Columbia Basin Herald article which quoted  Norco CEO Jim Kissler  as saying ""We ‘harvest the sky,' by freezing the atmosphere and separating it into oxygen, nitrogen and argon".Nitrogen aides food processing and packaging companies with freezing.Argon is bought by steel fabrication for welding. Oxygen is utilized by hospitals and medical offices."Norco's new air separation plant has the capacity to fill the needs of these industries," Norco's President, Pontious stated.Between three to five employees work at the facility, where 150 tons of liquefied nitrogen, 150 tons of liquefied oxygen,  and 7 tons of liquefied argon are made daily. In the future, the pla...

The first bank can be traced back to 1407 which was founded in Italy now I ask of you, what other institution is there that has basically been around and been run the same as it was when it began? Ok you're right the world's oldest profession and we all know what that is!  But besides that is there any other industry that has survived as long as banks have?  It begs the question have banks outlived their usefulness?  Granted we need somewhere safe to put our money but there has to be other ways out there then just going back to the same thing we have been using since 1407. It seems that the banks have not grasped the fact that business needs to be done differently since the onslaught of this economic tragedy!  They can't accept the fact that million dollar bonuses shouldn't be a right t...

The tax deductions you're eligible to take for mortgage interest and property taxes greatly increase the financial benefits of homeownership. Here's how it works. Assume: $9,877 = Mortgage interest paid (a loan of $150,000 for 30 years, at 7 percent, using year-five interest) $2,700 = Property taxes (at 1.5 percent on $180,000 assessed value)______$12,577 = Total deduction Then, multiply your total deduction by your tax rate. For example, at a 28 percent tax rate: 12,577 x 0.28 = $3,521.56 $3,521.56 = Amount you have lowered your federal income tax (at 28 percent tax rate) Note: Mortgage interest may not be deductible on loans over $1.1 million. In addition, deductions are decreased when total income reaches a certain level. Here is a complete guide to home tax deductions.  --Ray Deb & ...

In searching and trying to find what the topic "du jour" is today it has become glaringly obvious that it is the home buyer tax credit.  There are a couple things that I think about the credit and believe me everything I write here is strictly opinion and nothing else. I don't know if the tax credit is going to help us, is it a band-aid for a solution that is much bigger then we can wrap our heads around?  With that said I am leaving it open for further evaluation. I have only had 2 clients that have used the credit and it was something they were thankful for. I think we are going to have a heck of a lot of pissed off clients if they extend and add to that credit. I see all these drawn out blogs explaining the tax credit until they must be raw at the fingertips when really it is quite s...

Well if you were around at all this weekend you felt the same weather I did. It was freezing, literally! In one of my divisions I had over 6 people whose irrigation pipes burst over the weekend. I just wanted to put a reminder out to everyone to make sure you winterize your irrigation systems and pools. Also make sure you wrap any metal water pipes that are open to the outside. If you don't you could have a problem like we had this weekend. For more information on winterizing your system click here Make sure you're prepared for the cold!
