Recently Washington state became one of many states who are churning up lawsuits from tenants over criteria for residency. The ALCU represented a woman who was denied tenancy based on a 1995 drug conviction.  The basis for the lawsuit is that the company used criteria that violated state laws that forbids tenant screening agencies from using criminal convictions more than seven years old.  The landlord who was using the tenant screening service had no idea he received information prohibited by state laws.Being a landlord is not a job for the faint of heart.  Most turn to professional property managers to handle the intricacies of dealing with their rental property as there are many well-trained and seasoned pros.  Whether you are a Landlord or Property Manager, it is important that you ...

Recently my husband and I remodeled our kitchen and I have never been a happier clam!  When we first purchased our home, three years ago,  we knew it needed LOTS of work and having plenty of experience remodeling homes, we weren’t daunted by the fact.  However, after we moved in and our priorities changed, the kitchen just sat there, in all its circa 1966 glory and drove me bonkers at every meal. My husband wasn’t as motivated as I was to give it a facelift.  The kitchen was more utilitarian to him. He was more into buying a new tractor, replacing windows, building a barn.  Yes, all necessities, but a kitchen is the heart of a home!  And our heart was in need of a quadruple bi-pass!  Old and faulty appliances, worn-out and dinged-up vinyl floor, buckled formica and plumbing that had bee...

The Fairhaven District of Bellingham is one of the most sought after places to live in the Bellingham area. A barrier to some that would love to live in Fairhaven is the prices on most Fairhaven homes and condos. Fairhaven has a Europen feel to it with several outdoor cafe's, courtyards, all kinds of shops and artist studios. Fairhaven also has several events and activities - Dirty Dan Days, Ski to Sea race finish line and festivities, and out door movies in the summer.  Thus prices on Fairhaven homes for sale and Fairhaven condos for sale can be out of reach for some. Here is a studio condo right on Harris Ave in downtown Fairhaven for Only $160K. The unit has many custom fixtures and finish work including a sleeping loft and bookcase crafted by a sail boat builder.  Click Here for a l...

NEWSFLASH: Not ALL Mortgage Backed Securities Are Bad!National Public Radio Podcast from the Planet Money Team 03/20/09: http://www.npr.org/templates/player/mediaPlayer.htmlaction=1&t=1&islist=false&id=102154567&m=102154705The analysis is laid out on the actual payback of Mortgage Backed Securities over time vs. the value today (i.e., if you sold your holdings). If you sold them today, sure you'd get back 50 cents on the dollar of your investment. You see, the world has gotten the view lately that risk is bad. Lots of folks are buying these things and would continue to buy them today. According to Planet Money: because they are handled by the big money managers who consider them worth every dime of their original investment -- they are not selling them! Sure, the banks that have the one...

OK, I'll admit it: I've been watching the behavior of myself and others around full moons all my life. I'm pretty sure I was born on a full moon. I am convinced that people go a little lunatic around those times. The week or so leading up to the full moon feels literally like a rising tide of emotion...people get a bit jumpy, things seem more dramatic. I drink more coffee, sleep less, talk faster. I've even been known to go shopping at midnight on a full moon. Am I imagining this? Well the moon is a pretty big thing in comparison to our mere bodies, most of which is water. The moon DOES without a doubt affect the tidal movement of the oceans, i.e., all that water... literally moving the oceans to one side of the earth in attraction to the moon's gravitational pull. Could it be the extra...

As a active resident of Bellingham, I like to stay on top of the many recreational events that take place every weekend.  There are far to many to write about so I'll pick and choose a variety of events so that you can grasp how much beautiful Bellingham has to offer. The Tour de Whatcom is a a benefit ride for the Boys and Girls Club of Whatcom County.  The ride starts in historic Fairhavenand will offer 3 tiers of racing... a 25 mile loop, a 50 mile loop, and a 105 mile loop.  The Tour will appease your senses with vistas of Puget Sound, Mt. Baker, rivers, valleys, and beaches with most of the riding consisting of fairly low grade.  The will be a great support staff providing tech support, pit stop refreshments, and road support.  This is a race for beginners to experts...something fo...

The Village Green in Fairhaven The Fairhaven district of Bellingham is one of the most popular places to visit in Whatcom County. People love to walk the old town streets and peruse the small retail shops. Harris Street even still has the original rail tracks and brick embedded into the street. This time of year, the businesses are beginning to get ready for the holiday season and Fairhaven will soon be illuminated in white lights. Like many destination shopping areas, Fairhaven likes to put on a production for the holidays. Christmas decorations everywhere and white lights wrapped around the old fashion light polls truly make Fairhaven a beautiful place to visit during this time of year. In the heart of Fairhaven you will find the Village Green. Not really large enough to be considered...
