'The Pirates of Penzance' is one of the most revered projects of Gilbert and Sullivan.  Centered around the main character of Frederic, a boy who was orphaned at the age of 8 and is apprenticing himself to a band of pirates.  Based on pirate lore, he must apprentice himself until the age of 21.  However, due to the technicality that he was born on February 29th in a leap year, he is told he must apprentice until the age of 63.  Being an honest pirate, that is his intention and he asks for his beloved Mabel, the daughter of a modern Major General (my favorite song in the play!) to wait for him.  I have seen this play several times at var...

Moss Glen Falls in Stowe, Vermont is a spectacular waterfall to visit this summer. The Moss Glen Brook flows through a forest before the stream turns into a narrow confined gorge.  The stream goes over several cascades and small falls before dropping into a pool at the top of the last drop. The total drop of the waterfall is 125 feet which makes it one of the largest falls in Vermont. Most of the cascades in the gorge are inaccessible without rappelling gear. Moss Glen Falls includes a plunge, horsetail and fan. Moss Glen Falls is very scenic.  You will certainly want to bring your camera, and maybe even a tripod to do a timed exposure of the flowing water.  Be sure to explore the waterfall from its various vantage points as it looks very different from varying angles.  The main hiking...

Mt. Mansfield State Forest is a beautiful place to hike in Stowe, Vermont. There are many cross country ski trails to hike on. Most of the trails are very easy to walk with a few climbs.  There are one or two trails with intermittent steeper climbs, but nothing too difficult or too long of a stretch for someone in reasonable shape to tackle reasonably well.  Many people also enjoy mountain biking and snow shoeing on the trails. The trails are very scenic - heavily wooded along meandering streams with big boulders.  I love hiking there first thing in the morning with the morning sun and clean, fresh air or when late afternoon sends golden shafts of light through the trees. Mt. Mansfield is the tallest mountain in Vermont standing at 4,393 feet.  Mt. Mansfield State Forest includes roughl...
