Two schools scheduled to merge have been spared. Suffolk has been grappling for a long time whether to merge Southwestern Elementary and Robertson Elementary but have finally decided to let the two schools stand. The class sizes are small, both are fully accredited and the parents don't want the village feel of the schools to go away. There would have been a great savings every year by having one school but the parents have won out. City Manager Jim Vacalis is leaving.  This is the fourth top level administrator to leave in the last 18 months.  What's going on there.  If this was a company it would be in big trouble.  Let's hope Suffolk can get its act together and stop the bleeding at city hall. 12/31/2007

47 of Michael Vick's pit bulls are to be placed with eight animal groups.  22 of them will go to the Best Friends Animal Society of Kaneb, Utah.  One will to the Animal Rescue of Tidewater in Chesapeake.  Believe it or not, the dogs have a court appointed guardian, Rebecca J. Huss.  She has the responsibility of finding a place for each dog. 12/09/2007

Starting this week Public Works will begin work to transform part of Pinner Street into a one-way street.  Going northbound from Bank St to Finney Ave will be one way.  This is expected to ease residents concerns about speeding and congestion in the area.  The city will look at the problem in 90 days to see if any additional work needs to be don. 11/24/2007

Interstate I664 and the North U.S. 17 exit ramp will be closed for a week.  Why you ask?  Because the train tracks are being moved just a bit.  In fact it is happening in several cities.  The tracks are being moved to the median so that that there aren't as many at grade crossings.  Why now?  Because the new terminal in Portsmouth means more rail traffic.  The detour is expected to last three months.  11/23/2007

Suffolk's first redevelopment has a hit a bit of a snag.  It seems it could take more then six years to complete the project.  The latest problem is buried construction debris under half of the site.  The debris comes from a Planters Peanut plant that was imploded in 1995 and left on the site.  The cost to remidiate the debris may be around $200,000.  Added to the already $6.3 million dollar shortfall, things are not looking good.  City officials have repeatedly said that the Fairgrounds will go forward.  10/24/2007

Affordable housing is coming to a festival site soon.  The old Fair Downs is going to be turned into a housing project by a Virginia Beach developer.  Lawson Homes is planning on putting 171 homes on the the 23 acre site.  There will be 72 condo style homes, 38 multifamily homes, 48 townhomes and 13 single family homes.  The project will be called "October at Fair Downs" and is estimated to cost $20 million dollars.  Lets hope it gets off the ground soon. 09/29/2007

The Suffolk City Council vote to give the South Hampton Roads Habitat for Humanity $280,000 to buy 14 lots for the Organization's building blizt.  This is supposed to take place next year in the area of Huntersville.  The money came from the new affordable housing trust fund.  Now all they need is money for sewer and water connections as well as building permits.  People of Suffolk, lets give a little more. 09/22/2007

A human skull found recently by cemetery workers was likely from a person who died a long time ago.  The medcal examiners said ti appears to be old.  The skull was in a plastic grocery bag at the Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens and Chapel Mausoleum when it was found.  Why or where it came from may never be known.  08/16/2007

Three legislators from our area have been nominated to serve on the Hampton Roads Transportation Authority.  Our own Del Chris Homes, R-Suffolk will have the privilage of being one of a few that will help fund some much needed road improvements.  Hopefully the authority will get the right things done in a minimal amount of time. 06/29/2007
