Roses thrive at Lake Anna and this is the time of year that we are blessed to see them blooming all over the place.  As I show homes all around the lake I can't help but take a moment to appreciate the roses I see at many of the properties.   OUR ROSES Fortunately, we have roses in our own yard.  In spite of the threat of Japanese beetles every year I cannot imagine not having these gorgeous blossoms greeting me as I walk out the door or as I return home. If you are looking for a wonderful spot to grow your own roses perhaps you'd like to see if Lake Anna is the place for you.

We were very luck to have a wonderful dog named Sam.  Sam lived a long and happy life with us here at Lake Anna.  What a wonderful thing for her.  She moved out of a kennel in a Fredericksburg shelter into a waterfront home on a huge 13,000 acre lake. As Sam's life began to decline and we learned that she had congestive heart failure we knew tht it was a matter of time and we would have to say good-bye.  What would we do then? I knew that unless I took steps to fill that void before it actually happened it might be too difficult to do it after.  I know many pet owners that have said it was too hard once their pet died to replace it.  My thought was to make plans in advance which I did.  The decision was made to find a Cockapoo.  Our request for a pup from a litter due in April 2009 led ...

Friday Foto - Getting a Look at Lake Anna.  Even though we have lived here full-time for almost 19 years now I never get tired of going out on our tritoon looking at houses.  Naturally I have my camera with me when I go.  This is one of the photos I took in the early spring before the trees filled out.   Early spring is a great time to get a good look at the waterfront homes.  Although this house would be very visible even in the summer there are many others that play hide and seek depending on the time of year.  When there are hardwoods between the lake and the house the views of the house change from season to season.  Loving Lake Anna the way I do, I don't care about the season so much.  To me, it is beautiful all the time.

Roaming Lake Anna Roads...what might you see?  Well, I never know what I'll see!  The other day I was on my way to the office.  As I drove along I passed a spot I've driven by hundreds thousands of times.  The folks living on this property have sheep, goats, chickens, dogs, and who knows what else.  There's a pond close to the road so there are generally some animals fairly close to the road, although fenced in. On this particular day I was driving along and as I passed by, out of the corner of my eye I saw a goat very close to the wire fence. As I drove it registered with me that the goat was a little to close to the fence.  In fact it registered that perhaps that goat was a little too close to the fence.  I pulled into the next driveway and turned around. As I got close I realized tha...

Do all access homes at Lake Anna have boat slips?  Short answer is no.  Now I'll go into a bit more detail as boat slips are pretty important items here at Lake Anna. Access homes are located within most of the subdivisions surrounding the lake.  They are not waterfront homes which means property owners do not have direct acess to the water.  In order to launch their boats it is necessary for the subdivision to have a waterfront lot with a ramp known as a common area. Many of these common areas have boat slips for the property owners within that particular community.  Depending on the subdivision, they boat slips may be assigned or they may be on a first come, first serve basis.  If the are assigned they may be on a yearly rental/lease or the may be dedicated which means they convey wit...

That fish won't get away this time if they can help it.  Fishing is big time here at Lake Anna.  We have some very serious anglers and they have plenty of places to test their skills.   Not only is Lake Anna a great place to go out alone or with a friend to see what you can find but it is also a place that many come to compete.  Tournaments are big time here so if you have a competitive streak you might want to see how you do.  If you have an interest in catching stripers, catfish, large mouth bass, or crappie just pick up some bait at one of the many convenient spots that sell it and get out on the water.   What's wonderful about Lake Anna is the potential to fish twelve months of the year.  That's right, I have seen (and taken pictures of) anglers every season of the year.  Sure there...

Under new ownership and management, The Barn at Lake Anna recently re-opened.  It has been an integral part of life around the lake.  Situated on Lewiston Road (Route 601) it has been in operation for many years and has serviced a section of Lake Anna's population as well as many others in the neighborhood.  A favorite with local and visiting fishermen as a great spot to pick up bait. Always known for the delicious bar-b-que sandwiches The Barn offered, the menu has now expanded.  Home-made pizza is one of the favorites as well as a number of tasty subs.  You can even call ahead and have it ready for pickup by the time you get there. In need of gas, a lottery ticket, some basic grocery supplies?  You'll find them here along with a good choice of snack items and beverages.  It's a handy ...

What the heck is going on at Lake Anna?  We've been basking in the sunshine, enjoying temps in the 60s, 70, and even 81 degrees and now this. Night before last we fell asleep and woke up surrounded by snow.  Now we know the weatherman predicted this would happen but we sort of laughed it off and said, "No way!". We'll Survive and Thrive...it really is Spring at Lake Anna   This is our time of the year.  Time for us to dazzle everyone with our bright yellow color and to let them know that spring had officially arrived.  Folks will think they've been duped.  Early spring is the time for hyacinths, magnolia buds on the trees, cherry blossoms, forsythia, and of course us, not the time for snow.  You had the winter.  This is our season.  Please enjoy the winter and leave the spring to us.

What type of weather do you have at Lake Anna?  That's a question that comes up fairly often with buyers as we have a number of clients from out of state considering a move to our area.  Although we have many property owners from either the Washington, D.C. area or the Richmond area we also have those from various those from various states including Ohio, Wisconsin, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and the Carolinas. Mostly the question about the weather leads up to an interest in how much snow do we get during the winter.  Well, it generally does not amount to very much at all.  Once in a while we have an exceptional year and we have more.  Last year (winter of 2009-2010) was a bit of an anomaly.  We had more snow that year than we usually have in five or six years. Summer days at L...

Are boats allowed on Lake Anna and if so what type?  This is a question that I often receive when the person has not been to Lake Anna.  What they do know is there are some bodies of water that do not allow any boats and others that allow only non-power boats.  Even some places restrict the size and/or number of boats that can be owned. Lake Anna currently has no restrictions on size, type of boat, or number of boats a property owner can have.  This is the way it has been since Lake Anna was created almost 40 years ago.  We are fortunate to be able to have canoes, kayaks, pontoons, tritoons, motor boats, paddle boats, fishing boats, sail boats, row boats, cabin cruisers, and even house boats. There are loads of jet skis also. Life for boaters is wonderful at Lake Anna.  It's great to ha...

Lake Anna's First Traffic Light!  For 18 plus years I've been living here at Lake Anna.  During all of that time we have never had a traffic light here at the lake.  In fact, for many years the closest traffic light was 18 miles away.  Now I don't live in the wilds of Wyoming or the outback in Australia.  Lake Anna is located in Central Virginia, less than 90 miles from Washington, D.C.  It's great that we live so close to places like D.C, the capital of the United States, Richmond, the capital of Virginia, Fredericksburg, a site of major historical significance and yet we are in the country. It certainly looks like things are changing at Lake Anna.  When you drive along Courthouse Road/New Bridge Road, also known as Rt. 208 you will eventually cross what we call the big bridge.  It is ...

Living at Lake Anna is for the dogs.  I discovered this when my mom and dad brought me home about 18 months ago (I can hardly believe it's been that long).  Anyway, as soon as I got a look at this place I realized that I was going to be happy here. My ears aren't always like this.  Kate caught me turning my head.  She must have been calling "Lindy". In my backyard I have a big puddle of water.  I've been told it's about 13,000+ acres so there's no reason I'll ever get thirsty.  It's nice not to have to depend on someone to pour some water for me.  I like having it handy.  I also find that when it gets hot (I know, looking at my picture you might not think that happens here but it sure does) I stroll down to the water, wade into Lake Anna and cool off my tummy. Running along the shore is...

Sellers, have you thought that Winter Buyers might be really serious buyers?  Yes, that's right.  If you are thinking of selling but are a bit concerned that putting your house on the market in the winter might not be a good time you might want to rethink that.  Spring may not always be the best time. In the winter very few people get up on a Saturday or Sunday morning and say, hey let's take a ride and maybe look at some houses for the fun of it.  Oh, no.  That's saved for warmer weather. Now, in the winter when the temperatures are really low and it may be more tempting to stay home, curl up on the couch to read a book (aka watching football by some), or to hit the stores running some folks actually go out to look at houses. Winter is Beautiful too!  It became apparent to me years ago...
