TD Bank's 3rd annual Mortgage Service Index seems to indicate that consumer interest in buying a home is on the rise. 30% of the 1,456 participants felt that now is a good time to buy a home and 29% said that they plan to make the move sometime this year. This is a significant increase as compared to the 20% of respondents that felt the same way in last year’s survey.   In a previous blog I had discussed the fact that Millennials may play an important role in the housing market this year. This appears to be coming to fruition as 50% of the Millennials that took part in the survey stated that they definitely plan to buy a home of their own within the next year and 1/3 of them also considered now to be an opportune time for buyers.   It should be noted that many home shoppers (51%) still...

As we all know, buying a new home can be challenging in many ways. Aside from all of the paperwork and legal requirements there is the process of getting approved for a home loan. Part of this process involves the lender taking a close look at your credit report in order to determine if you are a good credit risk. Currently there are 3 major agencies that all major lenders use to obtain your credit report; Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.   Unfortunately not everyone is considered credit worthy as a result of what may or may not be contained within their credit report and may not be able to obtain a home loan. Now, however, there may be new hope for those persons that have not been able to obtain mortgage  loan in the past. All 3 credit reporting agencies have announced the launch of ...

HUD (the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) is taking steps to help thousands of individuals with disabilities realize the dream of owning their own home. Their concern is that without a helping hand many of these people may have no choice but to live in an institution, or worse, end up with no home at all.   The agency will be providing $150 in rental assistance to 25 different state agencies that provide a place to live for people that find themselves in this situation and the states will use the influx of cash to provide permanent housing (and other necessary services) to those whom qualify. It is estimated that approximately 4,600 households with low income disabled persons will benefit from the program. In many cases it will allow people that are currently residing ...

A great neighborhood organization that helps support great neighborhood causes ... what else could you ask for?  This weekend my husband I got all dolled up and headed out in the bitter cold to support the Fan Woman's Club at their auction. What a fabulous event!  In addition to its members, the FWC (Fan Woman's Club) opened up this event friends and family of members.  And since we all the love the Fan, we held the event in the Fan, of course!  The Orchard House School was generous enough to open their doors to the FWC for this event. Their top floor was the perfect location for this crowd.   Yes, there was food. Yes, there was drink (and lot of it). Yes, there was live music.  But the best part was the auction!  There was both a silent and live auction ... so many ways for you to spen...

How do you know when it’s time to hire a virtual assistant? The signs are pretty obvious if you are paying attention. If you once had a desk but now have only various (but well sorted) piles of paper, it’s time. If you missed an important meeting with a client because your desk calendar is AWOL, it’s time. If you’re responding to emails late into the night, it’s time!   If this sounds like a typical day for you it just might be time to consider hiring a VA (Virtual Assistant). Perhaps you are wondering what a “Virtual” Assistant is or what they can actually do for you. A VA is a personal assistant that doesn’t even need to be in your office to get the job done. In today’s modern world a VA can do all of those tasks that you need to get done but never seem to have the time to actually d...

Like everyone else in RVA, we woke up to snow covered blanket. After I got over the fact that schools and daycare would be closed  ... and my closing wasn't going to happen, I took a little time to appreciate the beauty outside of my front door.  There's just something about the snow in the city. Yes, we all know that I'm wildly biased and have a love of the Fan. But add some snow to this neighborhood and it becomes even more beautiful.     And while most people are stuck inside during this snow, those within the Fan (and Museum District too) have the opportunity to head out for a great meal during this weather. Our neighborhood seems to be even busier in the snow!  Our house has a tradition of breakfast at Joe's Inn on snow days.  Put on your boot and snow pants, because we are walking...

It’s funny how much time some people spend analyzing other people’s lives. Whether comparing their clothing to ours or wishing we had a car like that, I don’t think it’s very healthy for any of us to judge our lives by another person. First of all it’s human nature for all of us to “put on our best face” when in public and a lot of times what you see when you look at someone else is not the same as what they are feeling. It’s easy to appear happy to everyone around you but true happiness is a little harder to obtain. Not only is comparing ourselves to others a grand waste of time but it can be very unhealthy for our self image. Thoughts of envy and jealousy are not the least bit helpful to anyone and wishing that you could afford a Lexus “like he has” will get you no closer to actually...

Recently Consumer Reports surveyed more than 300 real estate agents throughout the country to determine the most effective ways for homeowners to increase the value of their homes. I agreed with most of the findings and encourage home owners to read it before deciding on their next home improvement project. There are many things that can be done make a home more appealing to buyers and it’s not always necessary to spend a small fortune to get top dollar from the sale of a home. According to the study 53% of the agents agreed that the kitchen was the most important room to spruce up before showing a home to prospective buyers; 42% felt that the bathroom should be the first consideration. I know from experience that these are the 2 rooms of the house that buyers seem most interested in a...
