So apparently we're going to get some snow this weekend... on top of the 20+ inches we've already received.  Needless to say, all this inclement weather doesn't do much for the local housing market.  However, as one of my former brokers used to say... "I LOVE showing houses in the snow... because you know those buyers REALLY want to buy a house!"  So if you are one of those buyers who's ready to brave the elements to see the home of your dreams... or if you're one of those sellers hoping for a showing to one of those buyers... let's see how things look one month into 2010. This past month (January 2010) we closed on 87 residential sales (compared to 84 in January 2009).  Of those 87 sales, the average home sold had 3 bedrooms and 2 baths (no surprise there), had ah average list price o...

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13     History of Veterans Day The main hostilities of World War I were finished at 11th hour of 11th Day of 11th Month of 1918 with Germany signing the Armistice. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed an Armistice Day for 12th November, 1919. Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th, the anniversary of the signing that finished World War I. Red Shirt Friday is one way ordinary Americans can show unity and support for the military personnel who have served or are currently serving our country. Soldiers have sacrificed their personal freedom, safety, comfort, time with their families and many have given their lives so we might enjoy ours. Take the opportunity at the mall, the grocery store or at the airport and say thank you to a soldier.   The Soldier: - By Charles M. Province It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. If you can read this message thank a teacher, If you are reading it in English of your own free will THANK A SOLDIER! It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. ...

Well we're right at the end of September, marking the close of the third quarter for 2009.  While there are many reports about consumer sentiment and jobless claims, one element of our economy that continues to make headlines is our housing sector.  Let's look at January through August numbers for this year in Lynchburg, and compare those with last year's numbers. This year, from January 1 through August 31, we have closed on a total of 1240 homes.  Last year, for the same time period, we closed on 1601 homes - a decline of almost 23% in the volume of homes sold.  However, this year, the average sales price of the sold homes was $169,716.  Last year, the average sales price was $180,781, representing a dip of just 6%. Now lets take a closer look at some of those numbers.  The average sa...

The team at RE/MAX 1st Olympic Lynchburg remembers 9/11 We shall never forget Yesterday was a beautiful day here in Va much like it was in NY on that 9/11/2001 morning 8 yrs ago. People got up and started their day just like any other. The horror of that day is something that none of us will ever forget and never should. America changed forever on that day. We have been at war ever since. It is so sad that there are people who hate and have so much evil in them.Let this day and every day be a reminder to live life to the fullest and appreciate all we have here in America. Let us NEVER forget how we all came together on that day. Love one another as God loves us. We placed flags all around the perimeter of the building as we paid tribute to the brave men and women who died doing their ...

Since 1783 the Lynchburg Community Market has played a key role in the development and growth of downtown Lynchburg.  The first Lynchburg Community Market was located on Water Street (now known as Ninth Street) and was an important economic contributor to the growth of Lynchburg. The 1783 Market was an open-air market, and served as the central social gathering place for the city. As Lynchburg grew, the Market grew also, and was rebuilt in 1814 in the center of Water Street.  The Market served as a town square area for the community, with city-wide notices and speakers throughout the day and evening. The Market was open every day but Sunday, and every conceivable good or service was located in or nearby in the developing downtown commercial district. In 1872, the Market was enlarged and...

The Museum is housed in Lynchburg’s second court house, completed in the Greek Revival style in 1855.  William Ellison, the designer of the building, borrowed heavily from builders' handbooks of the day which provided detailing from classical structures such as the Parthenon. The fluted Doric columns, pedimented portico, and commanding presence on the hill overlooking the James River evoke the classical concepts of the day. From 1855 onward, the Old Court House was used for a variety of courts: Hustings, Mayors, Circuit, District, Federal, and Juvenile Courts among them. During the Civil War, it was used by the Confederate government for the Quartermaster’s Department, Soldiers’ Aid Society, and the Soldiers’ Library. During Reconstruction, the Old Court House was used as headquarters f...
