Take Your Seats... Waterworks Players of Farmville, VA present Painting Churches!   For over twenty-five years, the local group of  Waterworks Players has been thrilling Farmville area residents with their live theater performances. While these performances never fail to impress, what is truly amazing is that all of these productions are done with a cast and crew completely made up of local volunteers! Their latest production is Painting Churches written by Tina Howe, which is "an unexpected figurative family portrait; a comic drama that is in turn heartwarming and heartbreaking, a the family struggles to cope with the vagaries of ages". One of my favorite gathering places in Farmville, VA is Riverside Cafe. I gather there for breakfast at least once a week.  Upon entering the door, I am greeted by Parker Wheeler with a warm smile on his face.  He is a hands on restaurant manager.  He tells me to grab a seat. Crystal is the usual waitress, she is the example of a happy, caring waitress.  She knows my order before I settle in, I have lately been changing my order just to shake it up a bit, even that doesn't throw her.  She fixes my special Diet Pepsi & Dr. Pepper mixed soda that I drink to begin the day. On any given morning the banter between the restaurant patrons is humorous and fun.  Consumers talk about work, the weather and the goings-on in Farmville.  I am greeted by neighbors and business owners all here to start...

Tonight I attended an event hosted by Longwood University, called the Executive in Residence series.  I have been to many of these open to the public events held at Longwood University. Tonight the speaker was James Zumwalt, author of Bare Feet, Iron Will. This is one great example of events that Longwood hosts and offers to the public, free of charge.  Tonight the topic was leaders, who think outside of the box.  He spoke of how he came to write the book.  He talked with amazing passion and emotion.  He spoke of how going to Vietnam over 50 times to talk with and interview Vietnamese soldiers and leaders and how they survived the war. He spoke of how their stories turned into his book.  He spoke of how they thought outside of the box to win at war. He told his stories and the Vietnam s...

I recently needed a dress for a black and white, black tie event in Farmville, VA.  This need came with a certain angst, because I was a sponsor and I wanted to look good.  Typical woman anxiety existed with concern over how I would look.  So, I took my husband to Caryn's Bridal in Farmville, VA  to help me find a dress. The staff at Caryn's started bringing me dresses, all styles, shapes and sizes, and watched as I tried on and eliminated dresses.  I was beginning to lose hope as dress after dress went back on the rack and back to the showroom floor. The women continued to bring me tons of dress opportunities and I continued to try on.  And finally, I found a dress that matched my personality.  And I was happy.  The owner Caryn Kayton assured me that the dress was perfect for the event...

One of the wonderful advantages of making your home in Farmville is the proximity to a variety of great opportunities while enjoying a small town lifestyle. Farmville is located within 1-1 1/2 hours of three great cities which all have distinct characters. One of those cities is Charlottesville, to the North which has a wealth of attractions and venues. It was the home of Thomas Jefferson and his influence is very evident in the architecture around the city, especially his home of Monticello which lies just outside the city and the Rotunda on the campus of the University of Virginia which lies within the city. I have spent many great trips visiting Monticello and UVA with family and friends.  If you love to go to a destination just to eat, then Charlottesville can offer everything fro...

Valentine's Day is just around the corner.  Hallmark is definitely getting the message out, so I thought I would too.  I love a reason to celebrate even if it is made up by a greeting card company.  For me, Valentine's Day will be about sharing my love for my family, friends, and clients.  It will be a pay-it-forward kind of day.  Because Valentine's Day isn't just for lovers anymore. There are many ways to express your gratefulness to those who make your life better.  Chocolate will just make you fat, and greeting cards are hugely expensive, so this Valentine's Day I am sending flowers.  I will be sending lots of flowers.  And for this task I would use none other than  Rochette's Florist in Farmville, VA.  Rochette's is a family owned and operated business which has been serving the F...

I own my company, Real Living Cornerstone.  I made the decision to open an office in October of 2006 at my 40th birthday party.   By January of 2007 the doors were open and I was ready for business.  This decision was mostly so I could do things my way in my town.  So I have and I do!  I know people who think of me as only an owner of a company.  This usually occurs when I work on boards, groups that I donate to, and other business owners. I want to be respected and looked up to because I run a reputable business, because I am a giver, because they like what my company stands for and is becoming. This year I became certified as a SWMBA business and I let everyone know that I am a woman-owned business.  My goal as an owner is to stay connected to the community that has allowed me in, to ...

Yesterday I met with my insurance man.  This meeting was brought about because of my recent experiences with insurance in general.  At the first of the year, I decided to get price quotes on my insurance policies.  This need was brought on by the additional cost of adding a 16 year old male driver to our car insurance policy.  I have been shocked at how much this basic rite-of-passage costs. In getting quotes,I learned a lot about insurance.  I had several people who gave me quotes and what I found is some were lower on some policies, some were higher, no one was able to provide a lower quote on all of my policies put together.  For me, I am speaking of a home owners, rental dwelling, car, general liability, business liability, workman's comp and an umbrella policy.  I consider this a g...

In 1999, after a major medical issue in my life, my husband went on a mission to get me to move to the country~particularly Farmville, VA.  Not that I am a city girl, but I am a rapid paced human. I thrive on action and energy.  Moving to the country seemed, well lame. I dodged the bullet in 1999.  But in 2001 it came up again.  I was deeply impacted by the 9/11 events and I promised my husband that I would go to the country with him and our family. By 2002, I was living in an 1850's home sitting on a hill centered on 22 acres. I love my home!  I enjoy the sunsets and the sunrises that are amazing from several windows in the home, I love my front porch swing, and I love the fact that my home has become the gathering place for my family and friends. After moving, I continued to commute t...

Ready, set, and go.  Buyers, my job is to get you to the point where buying YOUR home becomes a reality not a wish.  I will walk you thru the scary parts of the process and use my experience to hopefully avoid as many landmines as possible. I will represent you in this purchase.  When you look at homes for sale, they have signs in front of them.  They have all chosen one agent to work with.  They trust that agent to get the job done, they have chosen someone that they want to work with.  The agent represents the seller!  What I am asking is for you to give me permission to put my sign in front of you!  Choose me to be your trusted adviser.  Let me give you advice and guidance.  There are parts of this process that I can't guide you thru if I don't represent you.  I work with great lende...

When I meet with sellers, the discussion of open houses almost always comes up.  To hold open or not to hold open is the question.  In my rural market the location is often the primary determining factor in my choice to hold an open house.  I try to hold as many of my listings open as physically possible. Here are my guidelines on open houses: My Open House Plan: I will invite past clients-I do this because they know how I work, they will talk about my inventory, they want to help me sell my listings. I will invite the neighbors-yes, sometimes nosy neighbors know the next possible owner. I will post your open house on all of my internet sites at least 2 weeks in advance. I have had out of town guests come to open houses because they saw it posted and made the time to visit. I will hold...

Farmville Va's Best Kept Secret Driving down Third Street in Farmville, you'll pass quite afew businesses...most often you'd be able to guess the service offered from the road. But one of the best kep secrets in Farmville VA is the Miller's Country Store. From the road this business seems like a general store or maybe a lawn and garden store. The front is lined with hand-made / high quality swings, rockers, and gazebos, which are all reasonably priced. But this family owned business has so much to offer...much like an old fashioned country store it offers an assortment of produce, jellies, meats, cheese, and desserts. But the very best part is that they are a take out restaurant too. They have home-made bread that is just delicious, that add a special touch to all of their deli sandwich...

Welcome to Farmville, VA!  A great place to live.  I try to give referrals for the best of the best when you are here to visit or to live.  Today, I had a great experience with a local mechanic, it is one of many encounters with this shop and I wanted to share! I had a headlamp out on my car.  Happened over the weekend, and I didn't want to continue to drive without a headlamp.  I called Bailey's Auto Service on Tuesday and set up to bring my car by first thing today.  The office manager arranged it so I could be in and out~I had a busy day ahead of me. When I arrived one of the mechanics let me know that I would not be in and out as fast as I had hoped.  I talked to the owner and told him that I needed to look at my calendar to find a 1 hour plus window to have my light changed.  He sa...
