Built in Dumfries circa 1750 for Daniel Carol Brent it was probably constructed with bricks used for ballast by ships arriving from England. Originally it had 10 rooms, but now has 21 and 11 fireplaces.Sometime after 1790 it was sold to Alexander and Sara Henderson. He owned four stores and is known as "Father of the Chain Store".. One of their 10 children, Archibald, became the fifth commandant of the USMC. The "Granddaddy of the Marine Corps" served more than 38 years.During the Civil War the home was used as a hospital. For many years the house was occupied by criminals and vagrants who vandalized it until 1913 when it was purchased by Dr. D.C.Cline and his wife Annie. In eighteenth century England and Colonial America an "ordinary" was an inn or tavern where travelers could get an ordinary meal and a night's rest. It is believed this one was built circa 1765 and designed by noted architect John Wren due to the many style similarities with Christ Church, Alexandria VA It is not known if innkeeper, George Williams operated it, but it has had numerous names over the years including Love's Tavern and Stagecoach Inn. During the Civil War it served as a Confederate headquarters during the blockade of Washington, DC since Dumfries was a major seaport at the time.It is no longer "ordinary" since it is believed to be the only building of its' type construction remaining in Virginia. Although not as famous as his friend, George Washington, Virginia patriot George Mason IV (1725-1792) authored the Virginia Declaration of Rights. It was eventually incorporated into the Virginia Constitution.
