In eighteenth century England and Colonial America an "ordinary" was an inn or tavern where travelers could get an ordinary meal and a night's rest. It is believed this one was built circa 1765 and designed by noted architect John Wren due to the many style similarities with Christ Church, Alexandria VA It is not known if innkeeper, George Williams operated it, but it has had numerous names over the years including Love's Tavern and Stagecoach Inn. During the Civil War it served as a Confederate headquarters during the blockade of Washington, DC since Dumfries was a major seaport at the time.It is no longer "ordinary" since it is believed to be the only building of its' type construction remaining in Virginia.
