As some of you know I ran the Boston Marathon on April 21st, Patriots Day.  Part of my preparation included reading 1776 by David McCullough.  David McCullough details the events leading to the American Revolution, the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the leadership of so many including General George Washington.   In mid-1776 the “Americans” had a great victory in Boston which pushed the war to New York.  From around August of 1776 til’ December 25th, the Americans experienced one humiliating defeat after another to the British.  The American military was a poor site to behold.  Most often half the men enlisted were sick, had no shoes, were half starved, and ready to give up.  Some men died of exposure, freezing to death as they retreated from one holding ground to the ne... 05/20/2014

It started with a challenge in June of 2012 when my brother-in-law Steve told me I should try and qualify to run in the Boston Marathon.  7 months later, January 2013, I qualified for Boston by running a marathon (26.2 miles) in 3 hours and 7 minutes, placing 3rd overall in my first race.  3 weeks later I ran the Huntsville marathon where I placed first.  As registration for the Boston Marathon doesn’t open until September I knew I’d have 14 months to further prepare myself to run in the 2014 Boston Marathon.   In April of 2013 we all heard and watched the horrible events that unfolded at the Boston Marathon.  3 people were killed and many more were injured.  As soon as I caught news of the tragedy I knew I wanted to run the Boston Marathon more than any other competitive event I’ve par... 04/23/2014

Last week, Thursday at 4pm my cell phone rang.... it was my wife calling to deliver the news.  Did my 12-year old daughter, Kendall, make the middle school basketball team or not?  I dreaded answering the call.  I was bracing fo a "no", that would be followed by the broken heart and sobbings of my sweet Kendall in the background. Earlier in the year Kendall tried out for and missed the cut for the volleyball team.  She's been playing for years and missing the cut was totally devastating.  Rather than completely giving up, Kendall decided to be the team manager which entails the same schedule as the players but with the added responsibility of getting to everything earlier, leaving later, and all kinds of off the court projects.. a lot of extra work for the parents!
