              Every Year at Christmas Time I Miss My Friend, Mel Torme   By Bill Cherry                         I’m never sure exactly when it’s going to happen, but every year at sometime during the Christmas season I realize how much I really miss my dear friend, jazz singer Mel Torme.                Mel knew more about the mixing of cord harmonies than anyone did before or has since.  He was the one who taught that art to bandleaders Les Baxter and Artie Shaw, and singers Ginny O’Connor (Henry Mancini’s wife), the Hi-Los and the Manhattan Transfer.  He’s the one who wrote the arrangements for Chico Marx’s band when Mel was but a teenager.               And no one sung the songs of Christmas with more interpretive passion than Mel, even though he was Jewish.               Mel’s also ... 12/24/2014

Home sales in the Highland Park area were down 27% in June 2014 compared to last year, with 91 homes selling this month. So far this year, overall home sales have a decrease of 12% , with 458 homes sold. New Highland Park real estate listings decreased 1% from last year, with 133 homes listed this month.   Most real estate people would reap far more benefits from their advertising budgets if they would retain the services of a knowledgeable marketing firm rather than trying to go it alone. Spending thousands of dollars every month on full-page magazine ads of which more than 80% is covered by a picture of them with copy that's primarily for braggadocio is a high price to pay to build ones ego. Market studies have shown time after time that those ads do little to recruit clients. Third party testimonials are believable.  Tooting your own horn isn't. There's one portrait ad that I've see that does it perfectly. A well-known and respected agent with a Dallas luxury home boutique agency has an ad that is approximately one column wide and almost page long that she runs every month in the sam... 11/07/2013

This ad does everything it's supposed to, and it does it very well.  It is directed to and appeals to the specific market whose members it wants to attract It has a great concept, headline and copy It has the perfect graphics The type faces are of a point size that almost anyone can read the body of the ad without glasses (Enormously important in any ad) Real estate people rarely properly address their ads, and the copy is often nothing more than a list of specifics, and then they throw in their own picture.  By then, everything is so jammed in the space, the ad accomplishes very little.
