Occasionally, we have potential home buyers who are considering moving to Austin, and they ask about the primary employers here in this area.  Each year, the Austin Relocation Guide releases a list of the top Austin employers, both public and private.  Here is the latest list:  1. The State of Texas - 65,688 employees - http://www.governor.state.tx.us/ Top agencies include the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Water Development Board, and the Texas Department of Health. 2. Dell Computer, Inc. - Approx. 17,000 employees - http://www.dell.com/Dell was started by Michael Dell in his dorm room at the University of Texas, and it has grown into one of the Austin area's largest employers, headquartered in Round Ro...

One of Austin's most exciting and lively strips is South Congress Avenue, which hosts dozens of interesting restaurants, bars, and shops. Home Slice has often been rated "Austin's Best Pizza" by the Austin Chronicle, and the title is well-deserved. This restaurant, which sells "New York style pizza," is as close to authentic as you can get in Austin. (Individual slices are served on paper plates and the menu even includes directions on how to fold your slice like a real New Yorker.) You can go in and sit down to eat, or you can purchase individual slices at the window after 9:30 p.m. until late into the night. They also serve all-American desserts like Rice Krispy treats and cookies and milk. Tesoro's Trading Company, with a sister store on Congress Avenue downtown, has a collection of ...

An interesting article in this morning's Austin American-Statesman tells of a professor at ACC (Austin Community College) who requires, not lengthy papers, but that his students in his Texas and national government classes write their papers online, as blogs.  More fun for them to write, and for him to grade, he notes.  When I think back to having to write papers for class, and what a pain it was, and when I remember watching my sister, the teacher, spending hours upon hours grading papers after school at home in the evenings, and when I think about how much work, but interesting work, blogging is, and how it makes me think about what I'm going to say, I think this is a good thing.  How about you?  Do you think that being taught to blog in school (albeit college) is a good thing?  Do yo...

When many people think of Christmas (especially photographers and illustrators), they think of sleighs in the snow, white Christmases, and such.  Well, that's really usually contrary to our experience here in Central Texas, for the most part.  Especially the white part.  Today, our family gathered at the Apache Shores (Austin) home of my daughter Jess and her SO, Josh, for Christmas dinner.  (This year I've managed to have both the major food holidays at the homes of my children, which has been most relaxing!)  The day was lovely, and we ended up have dinner al fresco on their deck with its breathtaking view of the Balcones Canyonland Preserve (they share their back fence with the BCP).The one thing our Christmas shares in common with others is that we had a lovely day with family.  I ho...

Austin is a great place for families. All year round the city is full of events that cater to its citizens young and old. One of the most popular destinations is First Thursdays on South Congress Avenue where once a month the shops stay open late and the entire street becomes a pedestrian friendly party that the whole family can enjoy. The South Congress Area (or SoCo as it is now called) has long had a reputation for its eclectic shops, art galleries, and restaurants. On First Thursday, everything stays open until 10pm on South Congress between Riverside Drive and Ben White Boulevard. South Congress is close to many quant older neighborhoods like Barton Hills and Travis Heights. For those with kids in tow, you may want to make your first stop the Big Top Candy Shop. They carry a wide s...

Pemberton Heights is one of the centrally located neighborhoods located in the central Austin real estate market. High upon the bluffs overlooking Pease park, sits one of Austin’s exclusive, and somewhat overlooked, neighborhood, Pemberton Heights. The Austin Development Company created Pemberton Heights in the late 1920s, and lured potential buyers by offering "fancy $3500-$4000 cottages" as well as "$150,000 mansions." Their brochure touted, "over five miles of paved and shaded streets and sidewalks." Today, Pemberton Heights is filled with sizable homes that are a wide variety of styles, from mid-sized brick bungalows to revivalist Tudor mansions. As opposed to many older neighborhoods in the central Austin real estate market, most of the original homes built in the 30s and 40s are s...

I haven't managed to make it down there yet this year, but it's once again time for the famous 37th Street Christmas lights.  This is something I try to make every year - it's the most amazing experience, world-famous, and all put together by neighbors (not a neighborhood association, but each neighbor doing their own thing that comes together in a fantastic gift to the entire Central Texas community).  I could try to find some photos of it that are't copyrighted to put here, but I just ran across a website that has some virtual tours of the street that is so much more evocative of the experience for those of you who can't make it for the real deal.  Just imagine that there's a nip in the air, you're bundled up walking down the sidewalk (and into some back yards), there are cars driving...

If you're moving to Austin for business, you're in the right place! If you're moving to Austin for business, you're in the right place - and that's not just our Austin pride talking. The city is ranked third in Forbes' annual survey of Best Places for Business and Careers - for the third year in a row. We're also known for our vibrant high-tech industry environment. In fact, of the 50 fastest-growing technology companies in Texas, 19 make their home in Austin, according to a report released by Deloitte & Touche in August 2006. And, Austin's milder-than-most-cities' traffic, temperate weather and still affordable housing options were factors in another survey by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group of the "best tech towns" in the country, beating out such known tech stalwarts as San Jose, ...

Recently, Austin, Texas was named one of the "Top 10 Greenest Cities in America" by MSN City Guides.  This comes as no surprise to those of us who live and work in this great town.  I would like to thank Margaret Woda for bringing this to my attention.  Serving both as headquarters for Whole Foods Market and Dell Computer and home base for Lance Armstrong (at least part of the year)and Sandra Bullock, Austin also leads the entire country in wind power and biodiesel production.  Additionally, it has built advanced plug-in hybrid vehicles into its energy strategy.  Austin Energy offers one of the "greenest" power grids in the country, and recent demand for green power was so high that they actually ran out for awhile.  There is a new "batch" in place which will be available on January 15...

I was ready at last.  Time to fire up the DeLorean.  The flux capacitor is working properly and fully charged.  I have to get it up to 88 miles per hour in the mall parking lot before I slam into the department store.  Let’s set the dial here…DECEMBER 20, 1987I was a senior in high school that year.  Wow!  This will be an interesting experience.  I don't look forward to seeing how young I looked back then compared to now. Here we go…let’s get this baby moving.  We are at 78….80….84…86….87…..88!(BOOM!)Whoa!  I forgot that the mall and the parking lot didn’t exist in 1987.  I am in a cow field near Dallas.  I need to get a message to my mom somehow without frightening her with the appearance of 37-year old Jason.I guess I could try to call myself.  Wait…my cell phone won’t work.  Darn.  S...

Christmas is a wonderful time of year here in Austin, Texas for many reasons but today I will focus on our diverse live theatre offerings during the Christmas season.  You can go to a live play almost every night of the week.   A popular selection is the traditional Nutcracker ballet performed at the Paramount Theatre in historic downtown Austin. The Zachary Scott Theatre is featuring three plays this season which includes the annual Rockin' Christmas Party (a Rock-N-Roll Musical).  Rockin' Christmas Party has become a tradition here in Austin and is in its fourteenth year of pleasure giving to its audiences. You may also see Plaid Tidings or the Santaland Diaries. (Check the calendar for play times). The Austin Latino Theater Alliance is presenting its tenth annual performance of La Pa...

On Friday, I was contacted by Texas Realtor magazine, which is published by the Texas Association of Realtors.  They wanted to interview me with regard to how our company handles our bookkeeping, finances, tax preparations, etc.  Obviously, I was happy to take some time for this, especially when she mentioned that she had found me via Active Rain.  I also joked with her and thanked her for providing me with an easy blog topic!"Are you pretty active there on Active Rain?", she asked.  "Oh, yes.  I spend a good deal of time writing and hanging out there," I replied.  Here's her reply, which kind of says it all: "We have found that agents and brokers who are on Active Rain are a little sharper than average and they usually really know real estate."Any media exposure is terrific (unless yo...

Looking for something fun in Austin to do this New Year’s? Tired of late night drunken parties? Perhaps looking something a bit more kid and family friendly? Why not check out First Night Austin? Every December 31st the streets of downtown Austin Texas are transformed into a free performance and visual arts bizarre. The best part is that it is all free. The tradition of bringing in the New Year with a city wide celebration of the arts began in Boston in 1976. Since then, the idea has spread like wildfire to over 120 cities and communities throughout the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. While the first celebration in Boston brought in 60,000 people, now First Night brings in over a million people worldwide. This year the Austin festivities begin at 3pm and continue until just past...

Every March, thousands of music lovers and industry insiders flock to Austin to party, network, and discover the next great band at the annual South by Southwest Music Festival. The weeklong music blowout has been packing them in since it was founded in 1987. Austin was chosen as the site for the annual festival because of its abundance of unique clubs featuring country, folk, punk, reggae, jazz, and rock artists on a nightly basis. In the late 90s, the festival added two new additions. The SXSW Film festival begins the week before the music caravan roles into town and features first runs and world premieres of new films in theatres throughout the city. The newest addition to the SXSW menu is the Interactive Media Festival. Running concurrently with the Film Festival, the Interactive Me...

Last night my husband Roger and I went in to Austin from Bastrop  for an early dinner and some necessary shopping before our Christmas party which is rapidly approaching.  We ate a wonderful meal at Azul Tequila on South Lamar by Target and then went to Twin Liquor to buy some necessary items for the party.  Once that was out of the way we shopped the great selection of gift boxes that Twin currently has on sale.  One item caught my eye, 360 Vodka.   (Probably due to the fact that my son, Brent Garrigus has a Mortgage Brokerage in Phoenix Arizona called 360 Mortgage http://www.360mort.com/ ) I was impressed, right away this vodka proclaims it's belief in sustainability.  The box had tons of great info for those of us going green.  The vodka itself is 80 proof.  The glass bottle is 86% r...
