I have written several articles on the dangers of flexible plastic ducting being used as dryer venting. Although this material has been banned for years for this application, I still run across it from time to time, especially in older properties where the dryer system has been in place for decades. This I understand. Having inspected a recent rehab in another county, I ran across this newly installed dryer venting system.The newness of the plastic vent material, was another indication where the contractor was cutting corners to save money. Also the splice in the system is a good place for lint to collect cutting down on the dryer's efficiency or possibly damage the dryer. This I do not understand. LaVergne has been waiting a long time to get a major grocery store since the former Bi-Lo closed a few years ago.  We were elated to learn that Kroger was coming and when they opened earlier this month, the residents welcome them with open arms! This year alone we have a new post office, new Kroger, and new (fantastic) Thai restaurant.  These combined with a new drivers license station, new Taco Bell, new sit-down restaurant (WillStan's Grille) makes us feel like we're finally on the upswing of economic development. In addition, the city has responded to concerns about the biggest subdivision in the state by opening a police substation.  That opening is expected within the next few weeks.  Good things are happening in LaVergne! 09/01/2008

A new $20 million dollar shopping center is being planned on Industrial Blvd next to the new Colonial Town Park shopping center in Smyrna.  Centrum SSI of Nashville has purchased 21 acres on Industrial Blvd in LaVergne for the proposed Shoppes of LaVergne.  The Shoppes of LaVergne is the proposed name but the name may change.  No opening date has been announced yet and no stores have been named.  The development is still in the pre-construction phase.  04/22/2008

The Whirlpool Corporation plant on the Rutherford/Davidson county line in LaVergne, TN will be closing by the end of the year.  Plans were announced last week to close the LaVergne plant as well as a plant in Reynosa, Mexico.  The LaVergne plant currently manufactures built-in refrigerators.  This production will be moved to the company's Fort Smith, Arkansas facility.  Whirlpool Corp. is a leading manufacturer of home appliances under the Whirlpool, Amana, KitchenAid, and Maytag brand names.  Whirlpool has been located in LaVergne since 1986.  The company had previously announced in June 2007 the layoff of 330 employees when it phased out the production of air purifiers and dehumidifiers.  At that time, the company said it had no plans to close the plant.  This news comes at an especia... 02/10/2008
