Jamestown, TN is located in Fentress County. The county was established in 1823 and was named Fentress in honor of James Fentress, the speaker of the house and also the sponsor of the bill. It was taken from parts of Overton and Morgan Counties. The courthouse was built in 1824. Having a courthouse made necessary to have a jail. In 1828 the jail was built. John M. Clemens, the father of Samuel L. Clemens (aka Mark Twain) was one of the Jamestown Town Commissioners who prepared plans for the first Jail and Courthouse. Plans for these buildings, in Clemens own handwrighting, has survived for over a hundred years. The jail was made of wood.
