Jamestown, TN Real Estate News

Johnny Roysden is born and raised in Jamestown. His father is an elected county official, one of his brothers Dave, runs an auto repair shop in town, of which my husband and I are loyal patrons. Johnny is a builder of log cabins by trade, when I asked him how did he get started carving exquisite artwork, he said he just started playing around with a small chainsaw and it sort of happened. Amazing! Johnny is set up along the roadside now for the annual 127 yard sale this weekend. It is the world's longest, running through 5 states, but that is another story. So let's meet Johnny Roysden... This is one of his magnificent carved benches, with a number of other masterpieces around him, (yes the dogs too). Johnny took me down tho the shop, outside he has a number of pieces started. He begins...

There is a great new local eatery here in downtown Jamestown, called the Rumor Mill Diner. Owner Debbie Duckworth, has brought her horses, and resturant expertise up from Central Florida, and we are glad she is here. Debbie has been in the restaurant business since 1994, when she brought her first restaurant in Florida.  She bought the Rumor Mill Diner in May of this year, and her business has taken off.  She has already had to increase the size of her staff to 10, to service her ever growing business.  Her diner seats 70, and when I dropped in yesterday, it was packed with happy lunchtime patrons. Debbie also offers free delivery within city limits. Her homecooked meals are sumptuous, filling and won't put a dent in your pocketbook. Friday night is all you can eat spaghetti and fish. I...

It's no rumor...The Rumor Mill restaurant serves great food, simple as that. Centrally located in Jamestown, Tennessee, between Food Lion and Tractor Supply on the "main drag,"  it caters to the local populace as much as to the riders who throng to Big South Fork national park for the best trail riding east of the Mississippi. Recently opened, it is owned by Debbie Duckworth who is no newcomer to the restaurant business. She and husband, John, opened their first restaurant in Eustis, Florida in 1995. After selling that, they recognized the opportunity to serve the community of day trippers attracted to the natural beauty of the area surrounding the Moss Bluff Lock and Dam in Ocklawaha, Florida. Not far from the Ocala National Forest, it attracts residents of The Villages, just out for a...

With the general downturn in housing prices across the country, many prospective buyers wanting land or homes in areas surrounding the Big South Fork are astounded to find that prices have held firm, on the whole, and that owners are NOT inclined to accept ridiculously low offers. The reasons are twofold:  First, land abutting one of the nation's nicest national parks, where you can ride right out your back door into the best trail riding east of the Mississippi, a destination known as "The Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast," is just like waterfront on the coast or on a lake. Once it's gone, it's gone. When demand exceeds supply, prices will rapidly escalate. For now, they are still do-able, especially when compared to places where both prices and property taxes are high...thus, no ...

Covered porches were a way of life in the 50's, in most of the country; people would sit in the shade and watch the world go by. Porches had rockers, or porch swings.  Now it's decks. It's a desirable feature in newer houses to have a deck. You tend to see a table and chairs on the deck, with an umbrella, and a barbecue grill so even the furniture is different. Well, not in Tennessee! Typical cabins have a "broken-backed" roofline that forms a deep porch across the front and, for the most part, they still have rockers and porch swings. The pace of life is slower and folks here still know how to "set a spell."   For information about horse properties in the Big South Fork Tennessee area, www.trailridersrealestate.com

This part of Tennessee, the Big South Fork, is a destination for trail riders. It is called "The Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast" and is, in fact, the best riding east of the Mississippi! The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area includes 125,000 acres with hundreds of miles of trails. The local terrain is referred to as "rolling" and some of it is ....well...more rolling than others! Some of it is, in fact, STEEP.  There are many scenic overlooks where you can tie up at hitching rails and enjoy the view but first you have to get up that high! It is not a place for fat, lazy horses or out-of-shape riders. Many visitors come from places like Florida where it's hard to condition a horse for hills when there aren't any. The best thing is to start slow, with rides on some ...

It's the World's Longest Yardsale, also known as the 127 Corridor Sale... 650 miles, or thereabouts, across five states, from Gadsden, Alabama, to West Unity, Ohio. Headquartered in Jamestown, Tennessee at the Fentress County Chamber of Commerce, this unique event was first held in 1987 to lure travelers off of the interstate highways and onto the scenic back roads along the Route 127 corridor through Kentucky and Tennessee. 2009 marks the 22nd anniversary of the sale, which keeps getting longer and longer! Ohio joined only four years ago.  Attracting hundreds of thousands of bargain-hunting road trippers, the annual World's Longest Yardsale always starts on the first Thursday in August and continues four days through the weekend, ending on Sunday. This year, the dates are August 6-9th....

I had never heard that term before I came to Tennessee, althought I was familiar with the "hunt box" you'll find in Virginia. It's a similar idea; a hunt box has a couple of stalls for horses with an apartment upstairs and is used for foxhunting in the country on weekends. When the Big South Fork became a destination for trail riders, many people built what is known as a "cabarn," which is a cabin/barn combination with small living quarters and some stalls, usually under a single roof. The shape is completely different from a hunt box; cabarns here tend to be more the size and shape of a single wide with an efficiency apartment on one end and a short row of stalls under an overhang. This was intended primarily for weekend use for riders coming from Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga or ...

What happened to The Dog Days of Summer? It was an unusually cool and rainy spring and it is now a very unusual PLEASANT July! In fact, this run of cool weather has broken a previous low temperature for July 21 in Nashville that was set when Rutherford B. Hayes was president! When the temperature at the National Weather Service station dipped to 58 degrees at 5:30 a.m. that morning, it wiped out the previous record low for the date of 60 degrees, which was set in 1877. It's generally 5-10 degrees cooler up here on the Cumberland Plateau during the summer and the old-growth tree canopy in Big South Fork national park provides lovely shaded trails so this area has always been a destination for trail riders. Now, riders who get out at the reasonable hour of 8-9am can enjoy temps around 60,...

It doesn't look like much today but at one time this was a busy train depot.  The Jamestown Depot was built around 1928 when the O & W Railroad ran a line from Oneida in Scott County thru the The Big South fork Recreational Area,  then to East Jamestown and finally to Jamestown.  It ran until 1954 and then was dismantled.  It was chartered by Sterns Coal and Lumber Co.  It carried passengers, lumber, coal and many agricultural products and general freight.  The 30 mile track took almost 15 years to build.  The original O & W bridge still stands in Scott County.  We hope one day to restore the depot to its original glory.  You can see this old landmark on Hwy 52 in Jamestown, TN.

In the heart of Jamestown, TN just off Old Hwy 127 is a refreshing little park known as the Mark Twain Park.  The sand stone spring in the park was the primary source of water for the Clemons family.  Their home stood where the post office now stands.  John Clemons was the father of Samuel Clemons aka Mark Twain.  Although Mark Twain was not born here his family made many contributions to our history.  The park has a Historical Marker and is presently owned by the Jamestown Garden Club.  If you are ever in the area take the time to take a stroll in the park and walk where the Clemons family walked.

I spent the day on property working on listings.  The folks that own this property are out of town.  When I went to take pictures I was greeted by this lonely fellow.  He wanted a treat and some attention.  I had a really hard time getting house photos because he kept getting in front of me.  He was very persistant that he wanted a treat.  Rubbing behind his ears was not sufficient.  I need to put horsey treats in my bag of tricks.

This awesome view is from an over look in Jamestown, TN just outside of town at a small place called Mission Point.        You can see a hundred miles.  It is so beautiful that pictures do not do justice.  It was high noon when I took my pictures and they is too much light.        It is so exciting to not have to climb up miles of steep mountain trail to get such a spectacular view.  This is a place that you could have a wedding.  What a backdrop to start out a marriage. Jamestown is know for its horse riding trails.  But it is also has such natural beauty.
