It was a rainy Saturday afternoon in Upstate South Carolina so Jason and I decided to check out Stockade ‘n Stuff in Pickens.  This is a store that sells antiques and collectibles out of an old jail house that used to hold 80-100 Pickens County prisoners from 1935 until 1968-69.  We had seen the billboards and watched the two YouTube videos for Stockade ‘n Stuff and were both intrigued. The entry to Stockade ‘n Stuff is a wide gate of prison bars.  The interior is surprisingly bright and dry considering that it is built of granite stone, concrete and steel.   The large windows have bars on them too. You may have red my blog about the Bradley-Boggs House in Pickens. Well it turns out even better since I found out that Rhonda Duncan of Innovations In HealthCare of Easley to cast the winning bid of $52,000 when the house went to auction last Saturday. According to the article, Rhonda is planning on fixing the house up. I am so glad that someone has the vision and cares enough about history to take on this task. I love history and I particularly love historic buildings. Check out this article about the Bradley-Boggs Home in Pickens. It lifted my spirits to see another historic building is not going to be torn down to be turned into another generic strip mall. No offense to the strip mall developers, but there is plenty of places to build without destroying our past. The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation has been working on protecting this building and considering it is going up for auction, it was great news when Pickens City officials and representatives of the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation discovered that the city’s rules protect the property from being demolished unless such action is approved by the city’s Architectural Review Board.  Now this is not a guarantee that the b... 09/03/2009
