Coming soon to your mailbox, Higher Electric Bills! Many years in the making, Western Pennsylvania's energy market will be deregulated effective January 1, 2011. What this means to consumers remains to be seen but for the parts of the state that were deregulated earlier in the process it has meant increases between 10-40%, depending on who you ask. Previously, energy was generated by just a handful of companies that had a monopoly on our energy. In an effort to create a competitive marketplace the state decided back in 1996 to deregulate the PA energy market. In an effort to soften the blow to the existing energy companies who had invested in infrastructure the state enacted rate caps that have been in place for all these years. The hope was that in the meantime, other energy generation...

Yesterday was a perfect fall day here in Pittsburgh. 78 degrees, perfect blue skys and the leaves starting to turn. So instead of getting my lunch and tapping away at my computer I went out to the local community park and took a hike. It gave me the opportunity to come up with some new ideas and was probably more productive than sitting in front of the computer. It also reminded me why I think it is so important to own and build homes that are healthy for our families and our planet. Because some places are not meant to be bought and sold. They are places that add value to our lives, our spirit, our communities and ultimately to our homes. Smart growth development, environmentally friendly homes and energy-efficiency are not just fads, they are the ideas that will determine if we can co...

On August 2nd, the Pennsylvania EPA announced it was increasing the state rebate that is available to homeowners that want to put a new high efficiency furnace, boiler or gas water heater into their home. If you are considering an upgrade to your home heating equipment this may be the best time ever to do it. For a 90% AFUE gas furnace you can get a rebate of $500 (up from $200) and for a 95% AFUE gas furnace you can get a rebate of $1000 (up from $300). You can view rebates for qualifying equipment here. These rebates are available on top of the Federal Tax credit for high-efficiency appliances that is worth 30% of the cost, up to $1500. The catch is that the rebates are only available as long as the money lasts. As of today, August 6th, there is only 69% of the fund left. So if you a...

Highland Park is both the community and the name of one of Pittsburgh’s major city parks located northeast of the city. The grand homes of Highland Park neighborhood line North Highland Avenue and the central business district is on Bryant Street, which features a few small shops and restaurants. One of the nicest things about Highland Park is it’s proximity to so many things to do. It’s the home of the Pittsburgh Zoo, the city's only long-course pool which occupies an impressive 13,600 square feet, the Super Playground, a cycling track, walking trails galore and the Highland Park Entry Garden. Highland Park is great for walking and cycling since most of the area is flat, it is also well served by public transportation and an easy commute to the universities and hospitals. The median s...

I came across a great Pittsburgh website today and wanted to let others know about it. LivingPittsburgh.com is a one-stop source for all things free and affordable in our city. They have listings for free events, discounted eats, family activities, fun things to do and stuff for your health and home. The site is really well organized and has terrific info. I especially like the ability to find things happening by day of the week and neighborhood. They also have what they call start to finish discounts, like Inexpensive Date Nights and eco-friendly deals. Definitely a great site to check out. I specialize in helping people buy and sell homes that are good for their wallet, health, family and planet. Christa Ross, Ecosociate and RE/MAX Green Specialist.
