Today's post is being written because of a sad fire that took place in Lansdale, PA over the weekend.  Luckily, no one was killed, but a man is in the hospital with serious burns and injuries.  One home destroyed, five homes damaged, sixteen people displaced.  While we all are greeted with fire prevention material in the fire prevention month of October -we should think about fire prevention every month of the year! The historic borough of Lansdale, Pa. (Montgomery County) is home to many families who live in houses that are 100 years or more old.  Lansdale, with its mix of row homes, twins and singles, offers challenges for firefighters because older houses tend to have more opportunity for fires to start and spread. Now, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with older homes!  I live ...

"But Zillow said . . ." I can't tell you the number of times I have heard that from clients or prospective clients. Now don't get me wrong, I like Zillow (www.zillow.com).  It's well laid out, it's easy to navigate, it's colorful, it has some fascinating information. But it can't valuate houses very well.  And while they are the first to point that out in the fine print (found at www.zillow.com/wikipages/What-is-a-Zestimate/), an average consumer is never going to find where this information is buried.  From that page: The Zestimate is not an appraisal and you won't be able to use it in place of an appraisal, though you can certainly share it with real estate professionals. It is a computer-generated estimate of the worth of a house today, given the available data. Zillow.com does not o...

One of the things that make Lansdale, Pa. a great place to live is the depth of its history.  The Lansdale area began it's growth in the 1850's, with the coming of the Pennsylvania Railroad.  Its size increased to the point that the Federal government, in 1860, decided to make it a post office village.  Twelve years later, on August 24, 1872, the area was incorporated as Lansdale Borough. Today, Lansdale Borough is home to approximately 16,500 residents, living in 2.96 square miles or 1,894.4 acres of land. One of the many architectural gems we have is the Lansdale Train Station.  Now owned and operated by SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority), it offers convenient train service to and from center city Philadelphia. The train station was designed by Lewis Hickman in...

If you are in Lansdale (Montgomery County, PA) and want some great Thai cuisine, you have to go to Nadia French-Thai Cuisine (113 Walnut St., Lansdale, PA 19446 -- 215-855-3256).  Located steps away from the Lansdale train station, this restaurant is conveniently located with on-street parting and municipal lots nearby. The food is fantastic!  From a simple Pad Thai to one of the many exotic seafood specialties, you won't go away disappointed.  This is a BYOB restaurant, so you can enjoy reasonable prices and enjoy a bottle of wine from home -- another cost saver.  The lunch specials are most probably the best value in town. The dining room is not huge, so reservations are a good idea on weekend nights.  The staff is friendly and the service good.  Click here for a map!

While I'm just speaking for my own geographic area, I'm sure many of you in different places are going to share my sentiments.  Does is seem like just about every road around you is under construction? Just to name a few: Sumneytown Pike in North Wales - closed Allentown Road in Lansdale - closed Route 309 expressway - seems like it's permanently under construction! PA Turnpike Northeast Extension - the bridge replacements were bad enough - just wait until they start the widening project! DeKalb Pike construction Rt. 202 Parkway, and all of the streets it is affecting Fretz Road (Towamencin) - closed Wambold Road/309 connector.  Ugh! And this is just a partial list!  While I know it's going to better when it's all done (is it?), the "before" was definitely better than the "during." It n...

I'd like to take a few moments this quiet Sunday morning and say goodbye to a faithful companion over the last few months.  The snow in my front yard.  With all of the rain we've had over the last 24 hours, the last remnants (save for those giant snow mountains in supermarket parking lots!) are being washed away. Goodbye, old friend, goodbye.  I feel as if I hardly got to know you when you showed up in December like a guest showing up two hours early for a dinner party.  You came on fast and furious, and let us have that white Christmas that is so unusual in our area.  Then you left for a little while.  I was okay with that.  I had almost had my fill of you, really.  But then you came back.  Boy did you come back!  With your relatives and all of their luggage, too.  I tried to accommoda...

When was the last time your utility company wanted to give you money?  Uh-huh, right.  Like that's going to happen.  But if you live in PECO Energy's service area, you could get some cold, hard cash!  And if you don't live in the metropolitan Philadelphia area that PECO services, check with you own energy supplier to see if they have a program like this! Yes, there are rules about size -- and the unit must be working. Hey, they have a similar deal for old, inefficient electricity-guzzling window air conditioners, too! This is From Peco's web site (www.peco.com/SmartIdeas): There could be cold cash in your garage or basement. Get $35 and save money by having us recycle your second refrigerator If you have an older, working second refrigerator or freezer in your garage or basement, it may...
