                                          Frank Furness and his partner, Allan Evans, began the design of Clement Griscom's Dolobran in 1881, and continued with ever more grand modifications until 1895. Griscom was president of the American Steamship Company and the Red Star Line of ships, and a director of the Pennsylvania Railroad. We had a chance to see the first floor of this house on a tour sponsored by the Lower Merion Conservancy this week. Although the house looks large, the inside is even larger, because it slopes on a hillside in back. Located originally on 150 acres, grounds contained formal and informal gardens, farm buildings and pastures, and a golf course. Growing up on the Main Line, and attending Lower Merion, Haverford was an easy walk-to area, just outside of Ardmore.  A quick bike ride and you could be in Haverford in no time.  As a high school student, I spent many hours in the Haverford College library, where I learned that if you hit cancel, just as the photocopier was spitting out your print, you would get your nickel back!  I guess as an adult, I should mail them a check as a donation, so I will put that on my list!As far as real estate is concerned, compared to Lower Merion, Haverford is about on par with LM and Radnor.  There aren't as many homes for sale as in the LM Township area.  A total of 345 homes sold in the first half of 2007, with the average days on market (DOM) just 53 days, fairly in line with that of Lower Merion... 09/11/2007

As a fundraising family, my wife and I are always pleased to read about young people's efforts to make a difference.  From the Main Line Times,Good soul gathers good soles for families in need: "HAVERFORD - A Harriton student is helping to improve the lives of those in need, one pair of shoes at a time.Over the past few months, Alexander Stempel, 17, of Haverford, has been on a mission to collect shoes for an organization called Soles4Souls. At last count, Stempel's efforts had resulted in over 1,000 pairs of shoes. Last week, with the help of family and friends, he was busy filling dozens of large boxes with the donated items."I felt like this was a great organization and I felt that I could contribute a lot," Stempel said as he stood amid piles of shoes ready to be boxed for shipment.... 09/10/2007
