I think of The Dalles as being where Western Oregon transforms into Eastern Oregon as the topography changes drastically from just a few miles west.   Wordless Wednesday - Oregon Red-Tailed Hawk   Mel took this photo near The Dalles, Oregon (about 20 miles east of Hood River) of what I believe is a young red-tailed hawk. That's one of the things I love about living here... all the wildlife, particularly the abundance of hawks and eagles, as common here as robins and pidgeons were where I grew up.   Production operations to be centralized near current headquarters in Bingen BINGEN, Wash., Dec. 14, 2011— Insitu Inc., announced that it will expand its footprint in Bingen, Wash., with the addition of two new buildings, while also centralizing all production work. Construction of a 70,000-square-foot production facility and a 30,000-square-foot engine testing building is scheduled to begin in 2013 and conclude in 2014.   The Dalles Wrestling Club Hosted The Gorge Wrestling Tournament Today   Ten wrestling teams, from throughout the Columbia River Gorge and from Oregon and Washinton, met today in The Dalles for its annual tournament. Represented were novice through advanced wrestlers, ages five through 14. Both our sons (Sam, 12 and Ben 11) wrestled as part of the Hood River Wrestling Club and it was Ben's first tournament as he's just taken up the sport this year. Although neither won their matches, both fought hard so we are so proud of them. We've enjoyed being involved in the wrestling program not only for the physical conditioning and wrestling skills the boys have gained, but also for the dedication, perserverance and honor the program teaches.   Clock Tower Ales, The Dalles, Oregon   This is the popular The Dalles restaurant Clock Tower Ales. The restaurant is located in the second historical county courthouse building in downtown The Dalles. I stopped to photograph the building before I even knew what was inside because the architecture intrigued me. The courthouse was built in 1881 in the then popular style of Italianate. It housed county offices, the courthouse and the jail until 1914 when the current courthouse was built. After that time, the building was used for meetings of the Masonic Orders and even as a funeral parlor.  The current pub specializes in the sale of craft ales, wine and non-alcoholic craft soda. St. Peters Landmark in downtown The Dalles Oregon Located in downtown, The Dalles, Oregon and listed in the National Registry Of Historic Places, St. Peters Catholic Church was initially built in 1897. The church is gothic in style and truly impressive when viewed in person, as it is 176 feet high, topped with a 7 foot weather vane. Through the history of The Dalles, the steeple was used as an identifying point or benchmark and river boat captains used the steeple as a navigational tool. The church has 34 stained glass windows, most donated in memory of pioneer families. Artistic touches throughout the church, from the serene Madonna sculpture to the historic pipe organ, are stunning and of the highest quality.   Introducing " Memaloose", The Island of the Dead   Yesterday, my mom, my sons and I were in The Dalles, 20 miles east of Hood River. On the way home, we stopped at the Memaloose rest stop which is about halfway between The Dalles and Hood River. I have passed the sign dozens of times, but never paid it much attention so this time we pulled off. Well, it turns out that it's not JUST a rest site. It's a state historic site, playing a noteable part of the history of the Oregon Trail and the Native Americans in this region. Voila! Blog material practically threw itself at me! Downtown The Dalles, Oregon... Don't Miss The Murals The Dalles Oregon is located about 20 miles east of Hood River. Since we're just outside Hood River, we've focused our business here more, but lately I've been spending more time in The Dalles and I'm starting to really see the charm of this small town. The town is steeped in history and is the third oldest incorporated town in Oregon. The town of The Dalles marks the end of the Oregon Trail, although many pioneers continued on to Oregon City. Speechless Sunday - It's A Yard Sale Palooza! We were in The Dalles yesterday (20 miles east of Hood River) for the Cruise the Gorge Car Show and we came across this street corner. Cruise The Gorge, Car Show In The Shade, 2011 If you love cars, any cars, old or new, exotic or plain, the Car Show In The Shade was the place to be today. Located at Sorosis Park in The Dalles, the show featured a huge variety of cars and I can't even begin to guess how many cars were there... acres of cars. Our sons liked the newer, American muscle cars, like Corvettes, Mustangs and Challengers. My mom found the exact Porshe she drove in the 1960s and we all marveled over how much cars have changed since the antique cars we saw.
