Newport, Oregon-See the Sea Lions. My husband and I escaped for a few days to the coast last week, so I will be doing a few Oregon Coast posts as I have a section dedicated to the Oregon Coast on my Real Estate Salem Oregon site.  This picture was taken down on the historic bayfront in Newport, Oregon.  You can usually see the Sea Lions laying up on the docks behind the seafood plants.   Sea Lions have been in this spot every time that I have visited Newport. You can hear them from a distance-they are loud.   We heard them on this day from way down at the beginning of the stores on the bayfront.  Newport's bayfront has much more to offer than just seeing the Sea Lions.  There are restaurants, including Mo's, and many places to shop.  This is also where Undersea Gardens is located, along...

Oregon Coast-Places to Eat in Newport, Oregon-La Maison La Maison is a fairly new restaurant and bakery located in Newport, Oregon, at 315 SW 9th St.  We just happened to stumble on it when we seen an ad in one of the local area tourist magazines that mentioned Monte Cristo sandwiches, which just happens to be my favorite sandwich.  La Maison did not disappoint.   The food and service are fabulous!   The La Maison Monte Cristo is made a little differently from the standard Monte Cristo sandwich.  Roasted turkey and ham and included, but the sandwich is grilled on homemade bread and Gruyere cheese is used.   It is served with the ham and cheese on top.  Truly one of the best Monte Cristo sandwiches that I have had the pleasure of eating.  My husband ordered the Mediterranean which was al...

I learned last weekend that you can buy fresh Tuna right off the docks from Fishermen.  This is the first time in my life I have had fresh tuna.  Oh it is so good.  I don't know if I will be ever able to eat canned tuna again.  If you are in Newport, just right behind the the Rogue Brewery is a guy with pink signs out that has fresh tuna.  You have to buy it by the fish, and its 2.50 a pound plus 4 bucks to fillet it out.  So I think I paid about 40 bucks for a tuna and got a nice bag of tuna.  The fish weighed in at 17 pounds but after filleting I think I took home around 12.  So worth it.   We had also booked a bottom fishing trip with Tradewinds there in Newport and got our limit plus we got to put in crab pots.  What a weekend, fresh crab, tuna, ling cod, and sea bass.

Here is a photo of a lovely spot atop one the Twin Bridges in Logsden, Oregon. Here you can see the Siletz river, which runs all the way to the ocean and out to the Siletz Bay. There are hundreds of fun fishing cabins along the way, and in the mid summer, entire familes can be seen drifting atop inner tubes for a leisurely ride from one State Park in Siletz to the other. The fishing is outstanding in this river, I have seen some good sized steelhead and salmon pulled from its banks. The area is dotted with farms and is only about a 20 minute drive from the ocean. In the summer when it becomes foggy at the ocean, this area comes alive with visitors who enjoy the increased sunshine and old fashioned feel of the area. This photo was taken on June 5th 2010, the same day I stopped by the lit...

Take It To The Limit - Clam Digging on the Oregon Coast One of my first and favorite vacations was spent digging razor clams with my grandparents when I was five years old. I remember the shells and all the fun we had as a family at the beach.  Today, I still love the beach.  My girls love it as much as I do and we spend a few weekends a year, during minus tides at the bay digging for horseneck (gaper clam) and picking up cockles.  The early low tide is usually best and we can be out on the bay before 6:00 am in most cases.  We park at the Mark Hatfield Marine Science Center and walk approximately half a mile or so in to bay.  Look for a small quarter size hole in the sand that may or may not have sand in it.  Poke your finger down the hole; if there is a clam there, it will spit water ...

Pyromania Glass, Newport Oregon - A Global Treat For The Eyes   One of my favorite childhood toys was a kaleidoscope. One step through the door of this Newport, Oregon studio and you will feel like you are inside a life sized version of a kaleidoscope. Surrounded by a remarkable variety of melding and shiny colors, every where you turn there is something wonderful to see. The shop carries a variety of plates, bowls, vases, lamps, jewelry and of course their stunning glass floats.   Next to finding an full sand dollar, every beachcomber dreams of finding a glass float on the sand after a storm. Traditional glass floats usually come from Japanese fishing nets and travel thousands of miles before touching Oregon Sand.  My mom is the proud owner of a 15” Japanese float found by my brother o...

We were contacted by some home buyers that were looking at the Oregon Coast" After sending them information on a Ocean front home that was in quick sale" They were not happy that we did a good enough job in showing them the 25 homes that were in their price range" Even with price changes that were way below we came to the conclusion that buyers want to pay the prevailing prices"!! Do you find it to be true in your area? We are shocked that was our opion. Please tell us as homebuyers if you had the oppertunity to purchase a home on the Oregon Coast with complete panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean would you be appalled if we sent it to you and it was in short sales? Let us hear from homebuyers only ok please!!

The Oregon Coast Aquarium located in Newport, Oregon, is great fun for all ages and I can prove it! This aquarium was so much fun that I became like a little kid myself when I got to pet stingrays and sharks. This easy day trip from Tigard, Oregon, is one that if you haven't done it, I suggest you do it soon! Now it may seem expensive, but if you live in Oregon, I do suggest you buy the family pass for $80 as it was $56 just for my wife, kids and me to all get in. It makes it worth it the next time we go. (It nearly cuts the cost in half.)As you can see from the photos, that there is most everything at this aquarium and I'm betting that is why it was put in the top 10 of zoos and aquariums list to see in the United States. Now, I've gone to a lot of places, and one thing I find frustrati...

First of all, I don't know how you people in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada do this. It has been three days and I am dying! I was hoping to escape the heat a little by using the pool at our condo project. And wouldn't you know it, a part goes out and it is out for the week. By that time it will be back in the 70s again and who wants to use the pool when it is that cold?Well, there is one thing I could do when it gets that hot in Beaverton, and its the first thing I did... leave! I know, not very creative, but we drove for one hour and 12 minutes and it was 40 degrees cooler, and we actually had to buy a sweatshirt for me!The Oregon coast between Lincoln City and Newport has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its fun for the whole family, and it turns out it is a gr...
