Seven years ago, a nervous, young Japanese music student named Kazuha walked through the airport arrival gates in Eugene, Oregon.  She was about to begin nine months of violin study at the University of Oregon.  Kazuha didn't know anyone in Oregon and had little idea what she was getting herself into.  Was leaving her friends and family for a strange country with different customs a big mistake? One of the characteristics that I like best about living in Eugene, Oregon is the overall friendliness and openness of its residents.  It's not unusual to have nice conversations with perfect strangers anywhere in town.  In fact, I find it strange if I haven't chatted with fellow customers or the checkout clerk when I'm in the grocery store. Perfect strangers can become fast friends here.  That feeling was reinforced by a recent experience in a local barbershop.
